A Complete Guide on How to Choose a Petrol Water Pump and Maintenance Tips

By PackForge Technical Team, Faridabad · 6 min read

Where electricity at the field is missing or unreliable, a petrol pump is often the only way to move water from a canal, pond or tank to the crop when it is needed. Petrol pumps also drain flooded fields, fish ponds and site pits in the monsoon. The pump that suits you is decided by heights and distances, not by a guess at horsepower. This guide explains suction lift and head, compares the two PackForge pumps and lists the care that keeps them starting.

What Is a Petrol Water Pump?

It is a water pump driven by a small petrol engine on a common frame. It sucks water up a suction hose and pushes it out through a delivery hose. Both PackForge pumps have 80 mm (3 inch) suction and delivery ports and move about 900 to 1,000 litres a minute. They are portable: two people can carry one, or a small vehicle can shift it from plot to plot.

Why Use a Petrol Water Pump?

  • Irrigation without electricity at the field.
  • Portable between plots, canals and ponds.
  • Dewatering of fields, fish ponds and site pits.
  • Low maintenance for small and medium farms.

What Are the Types of Petrol Water Pumps?

6.5 HP Petrol Water Pump, 3 Inch

The 6.5 HP pump gives about 900 to 1,000 litres a minute, a total head of about 26 to 30 m and suction lift up to about 7 m. It holds about 3.6 litres of petrol and weighs about 24 to 27 kg. ₹9,140 + ₹1,645 GST.

Portable Petrol Water Pump 7 HP, 3 Inch

The 7 HP pump with a 170F engine gives about 900 to 1,000 litres a minute, a total head of about 28 to 30 m and suction lift up to about 7 m. It holds about 3.6 litres of petrol and weighs about 25 to 28 kg. ₹9,860 + ₹1,775 GST.

Spraying chemical from a drum is a sprayer job: see the HTP power sprayer pump. Where mains power reaches a pump that never moves, an electric set costs less to run.

Understanding Suction Lift, Head and Discharge

Suction lift is the vertical height from the water surface up to the pump. Both pumps are rated up to about 7 m. Measure it in the driest month, when the water level is lowest.

Total head is the height the pump must push water, plus the losses in the pipe, from the water surface to the farthest outlet. The 6.5 HP is rated about 26 to 30 m and the 7 HP about 28 to 30 m. Long pipes and many bends use up head.

Discharge is the flow, about 900 to 1,000 litres a minute on both. Flow falls as the head rises, so a pump working near the top of its head range delivers less water.

Port size: 3 inch (80 mm) on both pumps; match your hoses to it.

Features to Look For

Margin on head – choose the pump whose rated head comfortably covers your measured figure.

A sturdy frame that two people can lift.

Fuel tank size – about 3.6 litres on both, which sets the running time between refills.

A strainer on the suction hose to keep floating trash out.

Spares – filters, carburettors and pull starters are stocked.

How to Choose the Right Petrol Water Pump?

  1. Measure, do not guess. Write down how far, vertically, the pump will stand above the water.
  2. Measure the delivery side: the height and the pipe length to the farthest outlet.
  3. Describe the water: any silt, sand or floating trash.
  4. Count the running days in a season. If the pump will work every day from one spot, compare an electric set as well.

For example, a farmer lifting water a few metres from a canal to nearby fields has figures well inside the range of the 6.5 HP pump, which does the job on less fuel. If the measured head lands near the top of 26 to 30 m, the 7 HP with its 28 to 30 m rating leaves more room.

Setting Up the Pump at the Water Source

Most pumping problems start on the suction side. Place the pump on firm, level ground as close to the water as you safely can, because every metre of height between the water and the pump counts against the suction lift of about 7 m. Keep the suction hose short, airtight and free of kinks, with a strainer on its end and the strainer kept off the muddy bottom. Fill the casing with priming water before starting. On the delivery side, avoid unnecessary bends and long runs of narrow pipe, which use up head. Keep the pump in the open air, where exhaust can clear.

Petrol Pump or Electric Set?

A petrol pump earns its place where there is no electricity at the field, where supply is unreliable, or where the same pump must serve several plots, canals or ponds. It also helps in the monsoon for draining fields and pits. Where the pump will stand in one place and run daily with mains power at hand, an electric set is cheaper to run, so compare both before buying. Both PackForge petrol pumps share the same 3 inch (80 mm) ports, so one set of hoses and fittings suits either model.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Running it indoors or inside a closed pump room, where exhaust collects. Never do it.

Pumping muddy water full of leaves and sticks through a pump that is not meant for it.

Leaky suction joints, which stop the pump from priming.

Running dry without priming water in the casing.

Buying on horsepower alone instead of measured lift and head.

How to Maintain a Petrol Water Pump?

Before starting: fill the pump casing with priming water, check the suction hose and joints for leaks, and check the engine oil level as per the manual.

Strainer: clear it of leaves and trash every time.

Air filter: clean it often in dusty fields.

After use: drain the pump casing, especially before cold nights or storage, and flush it with clean water after pumping dirty water.

Off-season: drain or run down the fuel and store the pump dry and covered.

Frequently Asked Questions about Petrol Water Pumps

6.5 HP or 7 HP petrol pump - which should I buy?

When your lift and head are comfortably inside the ratings, the 6.5 HP is enough and uses less fuel. Close to 30 m of head, pick the 7 HP for extra room.

How much water does a 3 inch petrol pump deliver?

About 900 to 1,000 litres a minute on both PackForge 3 inch pumps; flow falls as the head rises.

What is suction lift?

The vertical height from the water surface up to the pump. Both pumps are rated up to about 7 m.

Can a petrol pump handle muddy water?

Only a pump specified for it. Fit a strainer on the suction hose and tell us about any silt or sand before you order.

Can I run the pump inside a pump room?

No. Never run a petrol pump indoors or in a closed pump room, where exhaust collects.
