A Complete Guide on How to Choose an Impulse Sealer and Maintenance Tips

By PackForge Technical Team, Faridabad · 7 min read

A bag that is filled, weighed and labelled is still not ready to sell until its mouth is closed properly. A loose fold or a stapled top lets in air and moisture, and it tells the customer the pack could have been opened. That is why an impulse sealer is one of the first machines a kirana shop, a namkeen maker, a home kitchen brand or an online seller buys. This guide explains how the machine works, which type and size to pick, what to look for in a good one, and how to keep it sealing well for years.

What Is an Impulse Sealer?

An impulse sealer closes plastic bags by melting the two layers of film into one along a narrow line. The working part is a thin heating element stretched along the lower jaw and covered by a PTFE (Teflon) strip. When you bring the arm down, a timed burst of current heats the element for a fraction of a second, the film fuses, and the jaws stay closed a moment longer so the seal can set.

The word “impulse” describes that pulse of heat. Nothing is hot before or after the press, which makes the machine very different from constant-heat sealers whose bars stay hot all day.

Why Use an Impulse Sealer?

  • Cold when idle: safe on a counter where people work and customers stand.
  • No warm-up: switch on and seal; the first bag is as good as the hundredth.
  • Low running cost: power is drawn only during the seal itself.
  • A finished-looking pack: a straight, even 2 mm seal instead of a staple or a knot.
  • Plug and use: it runs on an ordinary 230 V socket and needs no air line or installation.

What are the Major Types of Impulse Sealers?

Hand Impulse Sealers

A bench machine worked by pressing the arm down. It is the most common type and the easiest to start with.

  • Six lengths from 8 to 24 inch: 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 and 24 inch
  • Runs off an ordinary 230 V socket
  • Lowest price in the range, from ₹1,348 + ₹243 GST

Heavy Duty Hand Impulse Sealers

The same working parts in a stronger body for units that seal through a full shift.

  • Built for all-day use
  • The same six lengths: 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 and 24 inch
  • 5-year warranty instead of 2
  • Same spares as the Standard model
  • From ₹2,348 + ₹423 GST

Foot Operated Impulse Sealers

A pedal brings the jaws together, so both hands can hold and straighten the bag. See the FS Series foot operated sealer.

  • Hands stay free to hold the bag
  • Suits bigger and heavier bags than a hand model
  • From ₹19,353 + ₹3,484 GST

Table Top Impulse Sealers

A long bar on a table-top frame for wide bags and liners, as on the FS450T / FS600T.

  • 450 mm and 600 mm seal lengths
  • A long, straight seal in one press
  • From ₹39,961 + ₹7,193 GST

Understanding Seal Length, Seal Width and the Timer

Three numbers decide whether a sealer suits your pack. Seal length is the length of the bar, and it must be longer than your widest bag laid flat. Seal width is the thickness of the sealed line; PackForge hand sealers give a 2 mm seal, which is right for poly bags and pouches. The timer sets how long the element is heated. Thin film needs a low step and thick film a higher one. As a starting point:

  • >> 20 to 30 micron film: timer 1 to 2
  • >> 30 to 50 micron: 2 to 3
  • >> 60 to 100 micron (standard pouches): 4 to 5
  • >> 100 to 150 micron (thick bags): 6 to 8
  • >> PE-lined laminates: 5 to 7, test first

Always begin low and go up one step at a time. The right setting is the lowest one that gives a clear, even seal.

Best Impulse Sealer Features to Look for

Right bar length: one press should close the whole mouth. Two overlapping presses leave a weak point that can leak.

Adjustable timer: a dial with clear steps lets you match the heat to each film you pack.

Body for your workload: a Standard body for a few hundred packs a day; a Heavy Duty body when the sealer never stops.

Spares in the box: a spare element and Teflon tape mean a worn part costs you minutes, not a working day.

Warranty in writing: ask how long the cover is and what it includes before you compare prices.

Spares you can buy later: check that elements and tape for your size are sold and in stock.

How to Choose the Right Impulse Sealer for Yourself?

Measure the bag: lay the widest bag flat and pick a bar longer than its mouth. For example, a 10 × 12 inch pouch or a 500 g namkeen pack suits the 12 inch; a courier mailer suits the 16 inch; a 5 to 10 kg bag needs the 20 inch.

Know your film: plain PE and PP seal easily on an impulse machine. If your pouch is foil or a thick laminate, a hot bar sealer such as the FS300D / FS400D may do the job better. Read impulse vs hot bar if you are unsure.

Count your packs: estimate how many bags you seal on a busy day. Steady all-day sealing points to the Heavy Duty model; every type and size is listed together on the impulse sealer page.

Set a budget: PackForge Standard sealers run from ₹1,348 + ₹243 GST (8 inch) to ₹5,425 + ₹977 GST (24 inch). The price list shows every model, and the cart takes 3% to 15% off when you buy more than one.

Test before you buy: if you are unsure about a film, post us a few empty bags for a free seal test.

How to Maintain an Impulse Sealer?

A sealer that is looked after keeps giving a clean seal. These habits take a minute or two:

Wipe the Teflon strip every day: keep it dry and free of oil and powder from the products you pack.

Check the tape every week: brown or scorched patches mean it is time for a new strip.

Change the Teflon tape at the first scorch: a worn strip makes film stick and leaves ragged seals.

Replace the element when it breaks: if the light comes on but nothing seals at any step, fit a new element. It takes about five minutes.

Use the lowest timer that works: extra heat shortens the life of the element and the tape.

Hold the arm a second longer: keep the jaws closed for 1 to 2 seconds after the light goes off instead of raising the timer.

Keep the bag mouth clean and flat: fill with a funnel so powder stays out of the seal area, and stretch out wrinkles before pressing.

Unplug before any work: let the bar cool, then open the strip or touch the element.

Do a yearly check: look over the cord, plug and hinge screws, and replace the silicone pad if it has hardened.

Need a part? The spares finder shows the element and tape for each size, and the troubleshooting guide covers twelve common problems.

Frequently Asked Questions about Impulse Sealers

Which impulse sealer is best for a small shop?

For packs up to 1 kg, a 12 inch Standard model covers most bags. Very small counters that only pack small pouches often choose the 8 inch.

How many seals can an impulse sealer do in a day?

It depends on the film, the timer and how long the operator holds each seal. For sealing through a full shift, choose the Heavy Duty model, which is built for all-day use.

Can an impulse sealer seal aluminium foil pouches?

Foil and metallised pouches usually need constant heat, so a hot bar sealer is the better choice. PE-lined laminates often seal on an impulse machine at a higher timer step.

Why does my impulse sealer burn the bag?

The timer is set too high for that film. Lower it by a step and hold the arm for a second after the light goes off.

How often should the Teflon tape be changed?

Change it at the first sign of scorching, and always fit a new tape whenever you fit a new heating element.

Is the heating element covered by the warranty?

No. The element and the Teflon tape are wear parts, which is why two spare elements and a tape come in the box with every PackForge hand sealer.
