Impulse Sealer Troubleshooting and Timer Adjustment Guide

Most sealing problems are a setting, not a fault. Find yours in the table, set the timer right and keep the machine sealing for years.

Quick answer: Most impulse sealer problems are settings, not faults. A seal that peels needs a higher timer step or new Teflon tape; a brown or cut seal needs a lower step; light without heat means a broken element; no light at all means the socket or fuse. The table below covers twelve problems and fixes.

12 common problems, causes and fixes

ProblemLikely causeFix
Seal opens or peels apart easilyTimer too lowRaise the timer one step at a time until the seal holds.
Seal is brown, burnt or cuts the bagTimer too highLower the timer; hold the arm 1–2 s after the light goes off instead.

Light comes on, no heatElement brokenFit a spare element – about five minutes.
No light, no heatFuse, cord or socketCheck the socket and fuse; then call service.
Seal fails on some bags onlyDifferent film or thicknessSet a timer step per film; laminates need higher steps; foil needs a hot bar sealer.
Bag melts through at onceVery thin film at a high stepUse timer 1–2 for 20–30 micron film.
Seal leaks after fillingPowder or oil in the seal areaKeep the mouth clean; fill with a funnel.
Machine gets hot after long useVery high timer, no restLower the step; for all-day use choose a Heavy Duty model.

Film (both layers together)Starting timerNotes
20–30 micron1–2Very thin poly bags
30–50 micron2–3Light poly bags
60–100 micron4–5Standard pouches
100–150 micron6–8Thick bags

Always start low and go up one step at a time. The right setting is the lowest that gives a clear, even seal.

Maintenance schedule

WhenWhat to do
DailyWipe the Teflon strip dry; keep oil and powder off the bar.
WeeklyCheck the tape for brown patches; check the pad for cuts.
As neededReplace Teflon tape at the first scorch; replace the element when it breaks.
YearlyCheck cord, plug and hinge screws; replace a hardened pad.

When to call service

Questions we are asked about this

Why is my impulse sealer not sealing properly?

Most often the timer is set wrong for the film or the Teflon tape is worn. Check the table above.

What timer setting should I use?

Start at 2–3 for thin bags and 4–5 for standard pouches; go up one step at a time.

Why does my sealer burn the bag?

The timer is too high for the film. Lower it and hold the arm a second longer instead.

How do I know the element is broken?

The light comes on but there is no heat at any setting, or you can see a break under the tape.

Why does my seal leak after filling?

Usually powder or oil in the seal area. Keep the mouth clean and fill with a funnel.

When should I call service?

If there is no light after checking the socket and fuse, if the machine trips the power, or if a new element does not heat.
