This is the comparison we are asked for most, and it is usually asked at the wrong moment - after a unit has already decided it needs the bigger machine.
The two machines are not competitors in the way the question implies. They solve different problems and there is a fairly clear line between them.
A hand or bench sealer closes one bag at a time, with the operator setting the pace. A band sealer seals as the bag travels, with the machine setting the pace. Everything else follows from that.
Forget the daily count for a moment and watch the bench. There is one observation that answers the question properly.
If the machine is waiting for bags, you have a bench machine's job. The operator fills, brings the bag over, seals it, and goes back to filling. The sealer is idle most of the time and buying a faster one changes nothing, because the filling is the limit.
If bags are waiting for the machine - stacking up beside it, or the operator hurrying - then the sealer is the limit and a band sealer removes it. That is the whole test, and it is more reliable than any number either of us could quote.
It is worth stating plainly, because a buyer who has decided to upgrade rarely hears it.
It is ready instantly - no warm-up before the first bag of the day, and nothing wasted if you seal five bags and stop. It is cold when idle, which matters at an open counter. It takes almost no space. It costs a fraction as much. It handles odd bags, one-off sizes and rework without any setup at all. And its consumables are two cheap parts.
For a very large number of Indian units, none of that is ever outgrown.
Volume, obviously - bags feed through continuously and the operator is freed from the machine entirely.
But also consistency, which buyers underrate. The heated blocks are held at temperature rather than pulsing, so the thousandth bag looks like the first. Food, pharmaceutical and export packers often move for that reason before their volume strictly demands it.
And capability: air and gas flushing, and in-line batch coding, are available on this format and not on a bench machine.
A few minutes of warm-up before the first bag, which makes it wrong for small runs. Real floor space rather than a corner of a bench. Moving belts, which are wear parts in addition to the heating elements. And a purchase price several times higher.
If your count is modest and your bags are varied, all four of those count against it and we will say so.
Between the light hand sealer and the band sealer there are two steps that solve most of the problem for a fraction of the cost, and they get skipped.
The first is a foot-operated machine, if the real difficulty is that the bag needs both hands. The second is a table top machine built for shift duty, if the real difficulty is that a light machine is failing under continuous use.
A surprising number of enquiries that begin as 'we need a band sealer' end at one of those two, and the buyer is better off.
Comparing purchase prices answers very little. What separates these two machines over time is what they consume and what happens when they stop.
A bench sealer consumes a heating element and a PTFE strip. Both are cheap, both are changed in minutes by whoever is at the bench, and a spare of each sits in a drawer. When it fails, you lose the time it takes to fit a part.
A band sealer consumes elements too, and in addition the belts that carry the bag through, and it has a drive that eventually needs attention. Changing a belt is a job rather than a task, and when a band sealer stops, a bench that has been built around it has no fallback unless the old machine was kept.
That last point is the practical advice most buyers only get afterwards: keep the bench machine when you buy the band sealer. It costs nothing to keep, it takes the odd sizes and the short runs that are not worth warming the band sealer for, and it is what stands between a breakdown and a stopped despatch.
Ask any supplier what the belts and the elements cost before you sign. It separates quotations more usefully than the machine price does.
We will not put a number on it, because it depends on your bag and your filling. The test that works is whether bags are waiting for the machine.
Most units keep both. The bench machine takes odd sizes, rework and short runs where warming up the band sealer makes no sense.
Not necessarily stronger - more consistent, because the heat is held rather than pulsed. For food and export packing that consistency is often the reason to move.
