Fragile and heavy at the same time

A carved stone piece, a metal-and-glass lamp, a marble tabletop — each is heavy enough to damage its own carton and delicate enough to be ruined by the damage.

That combination defeats the two ordinary answers. A stronger carton does not help if the contents move inside it, and more cushioning does not help if the carton cannot carry the weight.

The answer is to stop the item moving and let the carton carry only the weight. Fitted blocking, not loose fill; the weight resting on the base, not hanging from the sides.

Where an item is genuinely heavy, a wooden crate or a base with a carton over it is the honest answer, and no sealing machine changes that.

Export handicraft, and a buyer who inspects

Handicraft export runs on inspection, and inspection happens after packing more often than before it.

That means cartons are opened and re-closed, sometimes several times, and each opening weakens the flap it was opened through. Plan for it: use a closure that survives being re-made, and keep spare board and tape of the same type for repacking.

Number the cartons and keep a packing list per carton rather than per consignment. When an inspector wants to see item forty-one, the difference between opening one carton and eleven is a day.

A strap applied after the seal shows whether a carton has been opened since inspection — which is useful to you as well as to the buyer.

Printed and hand-worked textiles

Block-printed and hand-worked fabric arrives at the packing bench with two things still in it: colour that can transfer, and moisture from finishing.

Both need air. Fabric packed tight and sealed in film while it still holds moisture develops a smell and, on some dyes, a mark — and it is found by the customer, not by you.

Interleave, and let the goods stand until they are genuinely dry rather than apparently dry. A pack that is delayed a day costs less than a rejected consignment.

For the outer, a strapped carton rather than a taped one; a light textile carton keeps its shape under a stack far better with two straps than with any amount of tape.

Stone, and a pack that is mostly timber

Marble, sandstone and cut pieces are the opposite problem: nothing is fragile until it is dropped, and then everything is.

Stone travels on timber, edge-protected, standing rather than flat wherever possible. It is a crating and handling question, and the equipment that matters is what moves it safely rather than what wraps it.

A hydraulic hand pallet truck earns its cost quickly where stone is moved, provided the floor is sound. On a rough yard it is not the right tool and we will say so.

Where slabs are packed with anything else in a container, the stone decides the loading plan and everything else fits around it.

Dust, and a dry climate

This is a dry, dusty city, and dust is the enemy of every adhesive in a packing store.

Tape does not stick to a dusty flap. Film does not cling to a dusty roll. Both are ordinary complaints here and both are storage problems rather than product problems.

Keep consumables covered and off the floor, and wipe the carton flap before sealing where goods have stood in an open shed.

The dry air has one advantage worth using: board keeps its strength here far better than it does on the coast, so a stack height that would be unsafe in Kochi is reasonable in Jaipur.
