The two questions that decide the machine

Almost every enquiry we get about a hand sealing machine can be answered from two pieces of information, and most enquiries contain neither.

The first is the bag: what it is made of and how wide it is across the mouth, measured flat. Film is the whole problem. Thin polythene, a heavy liner and a laminated pouch all want their own heat and their own holding time, so a sealer that handles one film perfectly can fail to close the next. Width counts because the bar must be longer than the widest bag you pack; if it is not, that bag gets two overlapping seals, which look untidy and let air in.

The second is the count: how many bags a day, and whether they arrive in a steady flow or in bursts. That single number moves you between the four formats faster than any other consideration.

• Dozens a day, one hand free - a hand sealer on the bench is the right buy, and anything larger means paying to fix a problem that does not exist.
• The bag needs both hands to hold - a foot-operated machine, because the operator holds and positions while the pedal does the sealing.
• Steady work through a full shift - a table top machine, which is made for hours of constant running, not the odd bag.
• Bags queuing for the machine - a continuous band sealer, which carries each bag along a moving belt and keeps its heat on all the time rather than warming and cooling bag by bag.

What it will not do

A heat sealer closes a bag. Stating what it does not do saves more wasted purchases than any specification we could publish.

• It does not fill or weigh. The bag arrives packed.
• It does not remove air. Vacuum and gas flushing are separate machines.
• It does not seal every material. Paper, bare foil that has no sealant layer and certain recycled films cannot be relied on to close, so send us a piece before you decide.
• A longer bar will not cope with a thicker film. How long the seal is and how thick the film is are separate limits, so a wider machine is no cure for film that is too heavy.
