Packaging and strapping machines in Ludhiana

Ludhiana packs two things that could not be less alike: soft goods that must not be crushed, and metal parts that will crush anything else in the truck. A great many factories here do both, in the same week, on the same bench.

Hosiery and knitwear, bicycles and bicycle parts, sewing machines, auto components, hand tools and fasteners — Ludhiana's output covers the whole weight range, and the packing problem changes completely from one end of it to the other.

PackForge Industries supplies from our works at Faridabad, roughly a day's road run up the national highway. This page is about which machine suits which half of Ludhiana's work.

Hosiery and knitwear: bales, bundles and crush

Knitwear is bulky, light and compressible, and the whole packing problem is holding it compressed without marking it. A bale that relaxes in the truck arrives twice the size it left, which is a freight bill nobody budgeted for.

Strapping is what holds it, and tension is the whole argument. Too little and the bale expands; too much and the strap marks the goods through the wrap. A semi automatic strapping machine with a repeatable tension setting is worth considerably more than a hand tool here, because the setting stops being a matter of who is on shift.

For the individual garment before it reaches the bale — the polybag stage — an impulse sealer is the machine, and for cartons of finished pieces, a low table top strapping machine at the end of the packing table.

One honest caution: strap cuts into a soft bale at the corners. Edge protectors are cheap and solve it, and it is worth deciding that at the machine stage rather than after the first rejected consignment.

Bicycles, parts and fasteners: weight in a small box

A carton of bicycle parts or fasteners is small, dense and heavy, and it fails in the opposite way to a knitwear carton. The box does not crush — it bursts, usually at the bottom seam, usually in a stack.

Tape alone will not hold that. Two straps will, and the standard arrangement for a Ludhiana parts unit is a sealer for the seam and a strapper for the load. Where the boxes are a fixed size, a semi automatic carton sealer is straightforward; where they change, hand taping plus strapping is often the more honest answer than a sealer that has to be re-set.

Bicycle frames and complete cycles are a different job again — long, awkward and not an arch problem. That is pneumatic strapping tool territory, applied to the bundle where it stands.

Buying a machine a day's drive from the works

Ludhiana is not the NCR, and it is worth being straight about what that changes. The machine leaves Faridabad run-tested and travels by road; it is packed for the distance, which is not the same packing a machine going to Delhi gets.

Prices are ex works, with GST and freight shown separately. If you have your own transporter — and most Ludhiana buyers do, because the route is a busy one — tell us and we will hand the machine over to them packed and ready.

We do not publish a delivery day here. What we will give you, on the day you ask, is the despatch date for the machine you are asking about, and the transporter's docket number once it moves. Those are the two numbers your own planning actually needs.

Where the machines go in Ludhiana

The industrial addresses here are the focal points and the older estates: Focal Point phases I to VIII on the Chandigarh road, the Industrial Area A and B estates, Dhandari Kalan out on the GT Road, Gill Road, Bahadur Ke Road for hosiery, and the newer plots around Sahnewal.

Dhandari Kalan and the Focal Point phases are where the heavier engineering sits; Bahadur Ke Road and Gill Road are hosiery. It is a useful split, because it usually tells us which half of this page applies before we have asked.

Strap: the thing most Ludhiana lines get wrong

More Ludhiana enquiries turn out to be a strap problem than a machine problem. A machine set for 0.55 mm strap will not run 0.63 mm properly; a machine set for 12 mm will not take 15 mm at all. And strap bought on price alone changes specification between batches, which shows up as a machine that 'suddenly stopped working'.

If a machine you already own has become unreliable, check the strap before you call anybody about the machine. If you are buying, tell us the strap you use and we will specify around it. We supply PP strap rolls as well, and will match what you already run rather than asking you to change.

Spares and support at this distance

Wear parts are held in stock for every model we sell, and at Ludhiana's distance from the works the sensible arrangement is to hold the two or three that stop a line on your own shelf. On a strapping machine that is the heating element and the strap guides; on a sealer, the blades.

For a fault, call. Most problems on these machines are settled on the phone with the machine in front of you, and that is far quicker at this distance than anything else. Send a photograph of the old part when ordering a spare — part names vary between suppliers and a photograph does not.

Questions buyers in Ludhiana ask

Do you supply to Ludhiana regularly?

We supply across India from the Faridabad works. Tell us the delivery address with the enquiry and the freight line is quoted against it, separately from the machine price.

Our strap marks the hosiery bales. What can be done?

Lower the tension and use edge protectors at the corners. Tension is a setting, not a fixed property of the machine, and it is the first thing to check.

Which machine for polybagging garments?

An impulse sealer, sized to your bag width. Tell us the widest bag you use — that is what decides the model.

Can we see the machine running before we buy?

Call +91 95822 69346 to arrange a visit to our works at Faridabad, and bring your own carton or bale. Seeing it run on your goods rather than ours is the point of the visit.

Will you match the strap we already buy?

Yes. Send the width and thickness, or a photograph of the reel label, and the machine is specified around it.

Who installs it at our end?

For a bench machine, it is a plug-in-and-set-up job and we take you through it. For a larger installation, tell us the site conditions and a commissioning visit is planned around them.

Tell us what you pack in Ludhiana

Send your carton size, load weight or line speed and we will tell you which machine fits — including the times when the cheaper machine is the right answer.
