Two cartons, one city: what does Ludhiana pack?

Ludhiana is widely known as India's hosiery and woollen knitwear city, and also as its main centre for bicycles and bicycle parts. Hosiery cartons: why does tape lift on a soft box?

Knitwear compresses in the hand and springs back in the box. When a carton is packed with a few pieces too many, the top bulges, the side panels bow out and the flaps stand apart. A sealer will still lay tape, but the strip bridges the gap and starts lifting by the time the carton reaches the transport yard.

• Pack to the carton's height, not above it. If a fixed count always overfills, order the next carton height up.
• Close the inner flaps flat and press the outer flaps together before the box enters the machine.
• Keep the side belts set to the carton's real width; a bowed carton pushed through tight belts comes out skewed.

Woollen knitwear is packed and sent out in the months before winter, so most hosiery units have one long peak each year. Cycle parts, tools and fasteners: how do you make a heavy box hold?

A carton of hubs, chains, spanners or bolts weighs a lot for its size, and the whole load hangs on the bottom flaps when someone lifts it. Three steps, in order of cost:

1. Wider tape. The PackForge 102TU runs 76 mm (3-inch) tape at up to 20 cartons a minute, which covers far more of each flap than 2-inch tape.
2. H-seal. The 5050J edge sealer adds tape across both short edges of the top and bottom faces, for packs of 2.5 to 30 kg. Its smallest carton is 320 x 200 x 180 mm.
3. Strap. Two PP straps take the lifting load off the seam. The 102PLS tapes and straps in one pass.

Focal Point, Bahadur Ke Road and the export route

The Focal Point estates hold most of Ludhiana's engineering units, from cycle-part makers to forging and machining shops supplying vehicle plants. Their cartons go to OEM stores and to exporters, and both expect a seal that arrives untouched. A steady size on a 102TU, or the 102PLS where every box is strapped, suits most of them.

Hosiery and dyeing units are spread along Bahadur Ke Road, Gill Road and the older city areas, many on upper floors with narrow stairs. There the compact sealer, about 1,000 x 750 mm and 100 to 120 kg, is often the only machine that can be carried in.

One machine or two for a unit that packs both?

Plenty of Ludhiana firms pack knitwear in one hall and hardware in another, or run a trading arm next to a factory. There are two sensible routes:

If the two halls are far apart or both run full shifts, two machines usually win. If one side packs only a few hours a week, one 102TU is enough.
