What are auto parts and engineering cartons like?

A carton of machined parts, forgings or bearings is small for its weight, and the load sits in a tight block. That is why auto parts packing mostly uses 5 ply or 7 ply corrugated boxes rather than the 3 ply board used for light goods. Four more traits mark this work:

• Oil and dust. Rust-preventive oil or grinding dust often reaches the outer flaps, and tape then sticks to the dirt, not the board.
• Many sizes. One dispatch bay may send OEM line packs, aftermarket retail boxes and loose spares cartons on the same day.
• Long journeys. Cartons travel far by truck, and export lots go on into wooden cases or containers.
• Checks on arrival. The receiving store wants a box that reached it unopened, so an untouched seal matters.

Why does tape let go on heavy cartons?

When someone lifts a box of steel parts, its full weight hangs on the bottom flaps, and only tape keeps them shut. Most failures start at one of these points:

1. Tape too narrow. A 48 mm strip grips a thin band of each flap. Under load the flap edge lifts and the tape peels from the middle.
2. Short end legs. The tape that folds down the front and back face takes the pull. Short legs let the seam open at the corners.
3. Dirty board. A film of oil or dust keeps the adhesive away from the paper fibres.
4. Point loads. One heavy forging resting on the seam pushes it open whenever the box is tipped.

A good carton sealer for auto parts removes two of these causes: it lays tape straight with even roller pressure, and it cuts the same leg length on every box.

How do you make a heavy carton seal hold?

Heavy carton sealing starts with the cheap fixes; add equipment only if needed.

• Move to 3-inch tape. Tape dealers in India usually sell this width as 72 mm. PackForge lists its 3-inch heads as 76 mm, so tell us your roll width and we will confirm the fit.
• Keep oil off the outer box. Bag oily parts in polythene and wipe the flap area when needed.
• Use dividers or a liner so heavy pieces do not rest on the seam.
• Add an H-seal. Extra strips over both short edges of each face close the corners where peeling starts. The 5050J puts down the middle strip and the edge strips on one machine.
• Strap over the tape. Two PP straps take the lifting load off the seam. Strap at a separate station with a semi automatic strapping machine, or do both together on the 102PLS.

Which carton sealing machine for auto parts fits which job?

Check two limits first. The published maximum width and height for the 102TU, 102TUS, 102TR, 102PLS and 5050J is 500 mm, and the 5050J will not take a box under 320 mm long, 200 mm wide or 180 mm high. Bigger export cases need hand taping or straps alone.

Fasteners, hardware and bearing boxes: what changes?

A box of screws, washers or small bearings may be hardly bigger than a mobile phone carton, yet it is heavy for its size. On a full-size sealer it can slip between the side belts or tip over at the taping head.

The 102TUS is made for this. It holds cartons down to about 80 mm and runs on an ordinary 220 V supply. Its heads take 36 or 48 mm tape, not 3-inch, so on very heavy small boxes add a strap or pack fewer pieces. The compact sealer fits a hardware trader or small workshop with lighter volumes and a cramped corner.

When is taping and strapping in one pass worth it?

In many engineering units a heavy carton is taped at one table and carried to another for strapping: two stations and two handlings per box.

If every carton gets a strap anyway, the 102PLS combines both jobs on one frame, so a single operator tapes and straps each box without lifting it off the line, at a rated 20 cartons a minute. The working table can be set anywhere from 570 to 770 mm high, so it lines up with an existing roller conveyor.

It makes less sense when only a handful of heavy cartons need a strap each day. Then a 102TU or the semi automatic sealer plus a separate strapping machine may work out cheaper. Count a normal week's strapped cartons and compare quotations for both routes.

How do you work out tape cost per carton?

We do not publish a fixed paise-per-box figure, because it depends on carton length, tape grade and roll length. Work it out like this:

1. Measure the carton length along the seam.
2. Add the two end legs. Measure one box sealed on the machine for the true figure.
3. Double it, because the machine tapes top and bottom.
4. For an H-seal, add the edge strips.
5. Divide the roll length on the core label by tape per carton to get cartons per roll.
6. Divide the roll price by cartons per roll.

Do the sum for 48 mm and 72 mm rolls side by side. The wider roll costs more per metre; a damaged delivery costs more than both.
