Why do Surat textile units now seal cartons?

Surat is the country's biggest centre for man-made fibre fabric: polyester and viscose blends, printed sarees, dress material and embroidered work. For decades wholesale lots left the city as stitched bales. Bales are still common, but several kinds of dispatch now go in corrugated cartons instead:

• Boxed sarees. Brands and larger traders pack each saree in its own printed box, then put a set of boxes into a master carton.
• Dress material and suit sets. Sets sold by count travel better in a carton that can be opened, checked and closed again.
• Online orders. Sellers on marketplaces send multi-piece orders in small cartons every evening.
• Outstation retail chains. Many buyers want stackable, labelled cartons that fit their own racks.

What makes saree and dress material cartons different?

Textile cartons are light for their size. A master carton of sarees rarely bursts at the bottom; the risks are elsewhere:

1. Springy contents. Folded fabric pushes the top flaps upward. If the flaps do not meet, the tape bridges a gap and lifts within hours. Press the stack down and close the inner flaps before the box goes in.
2. Flat shapes. Some saree boxes are wide but very low. The 102TU starts at L150 x W170 x H110 mm, while the 102TUS grips cartons down to about 80 to 90 mm. Boxes flatter than that are better taped by hand or grouped into a master carton first.
3. Clean surfaces. Buyers notice a crooked or wrinkled strip on a branded carton. A sealer lays the same straight seam on every box, which is often the real reason textile units buy one.

Sachin GIDC, Pandesara and the wider Surat belt

Most Surat enquiries come from a handful of areas, and each has its own carton:

• Sachin GIDC. This large estate south of the city mixes textile processing with dye, chemical and engineering units. Chemical cartons of bottles and jars are heavy for their size and do better on 76 mm tape; the 102TU takes it.
• Pandesara and Udhna. Dyeing and printing houses here send out finished fabric and printed sarees, often in master cartons for traders.
• Ring Road textile markets. Wholesale shops pack outstation orders in mixed cartons and hand them to transport companies for every state.
• Palsana and Kadodara. Weaving units and textile parks along the highway mostly ship in bales and rolls, with cartons for finished goods.

The diamond trade of Varachha and Katargam is famous, but its tiny high-value parcels travel by secure courier, not through a carton sealer, so we leave it aside here.

How do Surat's online saree sellers seal their parcels?

Surat is home to a very large number of sellers who list sarees, kurtis and dress material on online marketplaces. A single saree usually goes in a courier bag, but orders of two or more pieces, and lots for resellers, go in small cartons. The packing pattern is predictable: quiet mornings, then a rush before the courier pickup.

Two set-ups work well:

• One standard box. If most orders fit one carton, the compact sealer at ₹57,500 + ₹10,350 GST takes about 1,000 x 750 mm of floor and runs on a single-phase 230 V point, which suits an upper-floor unit.
• Three or more box sizes. The auto size adjust random sealer sets itself to each carton, handling about 500 to 700 mixed boxes an hour. It needs compressed air at 5 to 6 bar.

When is hand taping still enough?

Not every Surat unit needs a machine yet. A shop sealing a few dozen cartons a day in many sizes may do better with a good dispenser and better tape. A sealer starts paying back when one or two sizes run for hours, when the evening courier rush holds up dispatch, or when uneven seams draw complaints from buyers. A useful test: time one packer taping fifty cartons by hand, top and bottom, and multiply by your peak day. If that time is more than about two hours, a machine deserves a look.
