A pouch is not a bag with a better name. It is usually a laminate - two or more layers bonded together - and laminates are where honest advice about sealing machines stops being general and starts needing your actual film.
Pouch sealing machines are bought by the trades whose product has to sit on a shelf: masala and spice packers, tea and coffee, dry fruit and namkeen, ready-to-eat and pickle units, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical packers, and anyone filling a stand-up pouch with a zip.
The machine is the same family as a poly bag sealer - impulse or band, hand, foot, table top or continuous. What changes is that the film is engineered, and the engineering is exactly what makes it harder to seal.
A laminate typically has an outer layer chosen for printing and strength and an inner layer chosen to melt. If the heat does not reach the inner layer properly, the pouch looks sealed and is not. If the heat is too high, the outer layer distorts and the print blisters. The window between those is what a machine has to hold.
Two pouches that look identical can behave completely differently under a seal bar, because what matters is a layer you cannot see. A description - 'laminated pouch, food grade' - does not tell anybody whether an impulse machine will close it.
So the request is always the same: post a few empty pouches, or at minimum send a clear photograph along with whatever your film supplier has told you about the structure. It is the difference between a recommendation and a guess, and a guess in this category means a machine that is returned.
Many pouches seal perfectly well on an impulse machine, and for a small food unit that is the sensible buy. Thicker laminates, high-barrier structures and anything with a heavy foil layer often need sustained heat instead, which is a hot bar or a band sealer.
The symptom that tells you which side you are on is a seal that is good in the middle and weak at the ends, or one that peels apart in a clean line. Both usually mean the film wanted more sustained heat than a pulse gave it.
A stand-up pouch with a gusseted base does not lie as flat as a pillow pouch, and the machine has to close it without trapping a wrinkle. A zip below the seal line adds a thickness step that the jaws have to cope with. A spout is a different problem again.
None of this is exotic and all of it is worth saying at enquiry stage, because it changes the recommendation. Send a photograph of the empty pouch standing up.
Food and pharmaceutical pouches usually have to carry a batch number and a date. If you are coding by hand today, say so - some band sealers can carry a coder in line, and adding one later is more disruptive than specifying it at the start.
The seal itself is also part of what a buyer judges. A clean, even seal across a printed pouch is read as a well-made product; a wavy or scorched one is not, whatever is inside.
A seal that holds on your bench is not the test. The test is what happens to the pouch over the next several weeks, and it is a harder one than most buyers plan for.
A retail pouch is thrown into a crate, stacked under other cases, driven across the country in a truck that gets hot, unloaded by hand and then squeezed by a customer picking it off a shelf. A masala pouch with a fine powder in it finds every weakness in a seal, because powder works its way into the seal line as the pack flexes.
Two practical consequences. First, test a sealed pouch by pressing it firmly with your palm rather than by pulling the seal apart - a pack fails in transit under pressure from inside, not by being pulled at the top. Second, if your pouches travel far or sit in a warehouse through a summer, say so at the enquiry.
It is the difference between a machine that closes your pouch and a machine that closes it well enough to arrive.
Some laminates yes, some no. Send a sample or a photograph with the film structure if you have it - this is the one case where the honest answer cannot be given from a description.
Usually the inner sealant layer never reached melting temperature, so the layers are stuck rather than fused. That points to more dwell, more heat, or a constant-heat machine.
Often yes, but the zip is a thickness step the jaws have to handle. Send a photograph of the pouch and say where the zip sits relative to the seal line.
Some band sealers can carry a coder in line. Say at the enquiry that you need coding, because it is much easier to specify at the start than to add afterwards.
Press the filled pouch firmly with your palm rather than pulling the top apart. Packs fail in transit under pressure from inside, which is what that test reproduces.
The width of your widest bag measured flat, what the bag is made of, and how many you seal in a day. That is enough for a straight answer — including the times when the cheaper machine is the right one.
