How a carton sealing machine works

A carton sealing machine closes a packed corrugated box with self-adhesive tape, so nobody on the packing floor has to hold a tape gun. The operator folds the top flaps shut and slides the carton onto the infeed rollers. From that point the machine does the work: drive belts grip the box and pull it forward at an even speed, past one taping head mounted above and another set into the bed below.

Each taping head carries a roll of BOPP tape. The leading face of the carton presses into the loose end of the tape, a front roller smooths it on, and the tape runs along the centre seam while the box keeps moving. As soon as the trailing edge clears the head, a spring-loaded cutter blade snaps the tape and a rear roller wipes the tail down the back face. You get a straight, centred seal with a short L-shaped clip of tape over the front and back edges, on top and bottom at the same time.

Buyers search for the same equipment under several names: carton taping machine, box sealing machine, box taping machine or simply carton sealer. What does change between models is how the machine is set to the box size, whether it folds the flaps for you, where on the box the tape lands, and whether the carton is strapped in the same pass.

Semi automatic, random, compact, flap folder, edge sealer or combo?

The nine machines fall into six working types.

Semi automatic (fixed size). You set the width and height once for the carton you pack, and every box of that size runs through without any further adjustment. It is the simplest and cheapest way to stop hand taping. The semi automatic top and bottom sealer and the PackForge 102TU belong here; the 102TU is rated at 20 cartons per minute. Compact. The compact carton sealer occupies less floor than the standard semi automatic model and is aimed at online sellers and at cosmetic, pharma and spare-part units sending out small boxes every day. Automatic random. A random sealer senses the size of each incoming carton and moves its belts and top head to suit, so boxes of different sizes can follow one another without anyone touching a handle. The PackForge 102TR does this pneumatically at up to 24 metres per minute; the auto size adjust model is built around mixed-order fulfilment. Both need a compressed air supply. Flap folder. On the PackForge 5050Z the four top flaps are folded by the machine before the tape goes on, so the operator only feeds a filled, open carton. Rated output is 25 cartons a minute, and the flap-folding job, along with one operator, comes off the line.

Edge sealer. The PackForge 5050J runs tape along the centre seam and across both ends of the top and bottom, which is called an H-seal. The extra tape stiffens the box and makes any attempt to open it in transit obvious. It suits loads between 2.5 and 30 kg.

Taping and strapping combo. The PackForge 102PLS puts a top-and-bottom taping head and an inline strapping arch in one frame. One person feeds, and each carton comes out taped and strapped; rated output is 20 cartons a minute. Its working table can be set anywhere between 570 and 770 mm to meet an existing conveyor.

How to choose: carton size, cartons per day and tape width

Three numbers settle most orders.

• Carton size range. Measure the smallest and largest box you seal, in length, width and height. Every sealer has a minimum below which its belts cannot hold the carton. For example, the 102TU needs at least L150 x W170 x H110 mm, the 102TR at least 180 x 100 mm, and the 5050J at least 320 x 200 x 180 mm. If your smallest box is under the limit, look at the 102TUS or the compact model.
• Cartons per day. Count boxes on your busiest dispatch day rather than an average one, and note how often the size changes. If sizes change every few cartons, the minutes lost resetting a fixed machine will matter more than its top speed, and a random sealer pays its way.
• Tape width. Most Indian dispatch floors use 48 mm (2 inch) BOPP tape, with 60 mm and 72 to 76 mm (3 inch) for bigger or heavier cartons. Our heads are built for 48/60/76 mm on the 102TR and 5050Z, 60/76 mm on the 5050J, and 2 or 3 inch (50/76 mm) on the 102TU and 102PLS.

Power is the fourth check. The compact, semi automatic, 102TUS, 102TU and 102PLS run on a normal 220 to 240 V electric supply alone. BOPP tape, spares and upkeep

Tape is the one material a carton sealer consumes every working day. PackForge supplies BOPP tape rolls in machine-length rolls, which cut down on roll changes, plus shorter hand rolls for rework and printed tape made to your own artwork. Always order the width your taping head was built for; a roll that is a few millimetres off will track crooked and waste more than it saves.

The parts that wear with use are the cutter blades, the rollers and the drive belts. Cover for manufacturing defects runs for a minimum of one year (12 months) on each machine; consumables and parts that wear in normal use are excluded.
