What makes a carton sealer automatic?

On a semi automatic sealer a person turns handles to set the side guides and the top head for each carton size. An automatic machine takes over at least one more job from that person. In the PackForge range this happens in three ways.

• Self-sizing: the machine senses the box and moves its own guides and head, so mixed sizes can follow each other. This group is listed under automatic random carton sealing machines.
• Flap folding: a folder closes the four top flaps before the tape head, so the operator only places a filled carton.
• Edge sealing: extra heads tape the end edges as well as the centre seam, giving an H-shaped seal.

All four automatic models use compressed air for their moving parts, which is the first practical difference from the electric-only semi automatic machines. Buyers also search for an auto carton sealing machine or an auto box sealing machine; these names mean the same class of equipment.

Automatic or fully automatic: what is the difference?

There is no fixed industry rule, but in Indian enquiries the words are used like this:

• Automatic means the machine handles sizing or flap closing by itself, while a person still feeds each carton.
• Fully automatic usually means nothing is left for the operator except loading boxes, or the sealer sits inline after a conveyor and no one stands at it at all.

A fully automatic carton sealing machine on a conveyor line needs matching belt heights, a straight path in and out, and steady carton flow. If that is your plan, send your line speed, belt height on both sides and direction of travel with the enquiry, so the machine is quoted for your line rather than for a bench.

Export catalogues often call the same equipment an automatic case sealing machine. The word case simply means a shipping carton.

The four automatic models: speed, size range and air

The figures below come from each model's specification sheet. Where a figure is not published, the cell says so; ask us and we will confirm it against your carton.

For reference, 0.4 to 0.6 MPa is the same as 4 to 6 bar, so a normal workshop compressor line covers all four if it holds pressure at the machine.

What does each automatic model cost?

Rates are ex-works Faridabad with GST shown separately, and delivery is free to any Indian address.

Buying two or more machines brings a quantity discount, from 3% on 2 pieces up to 15% on 50 or more, applied in the cart. The semi automatic and compact models, which cost less, are on the carton sealing machine price page with all nine rates.

Random size vs flap folding vs edge sealing: which automatic?

Start from the job your packers waste the most time on, not from the speed figure.

• Staff keep resetting the machine: cartons change size every few minutes, as in 3PL, returns or marketplace dispatch. Choose a self-sizing model. Our random size carton sealers page explains how they read each box.
• One person only folds flaps all day: the carton size is steady but folding slows the bench. The 5050Z carton sealer with flap folder removes that step.
• Cartons get stacked high or opened in transit: tall, light boxes buckle at the edges and high-value goods need visible tamper evidence. The 5050J carton edge sealing machine adds edge tape for 2.5 to 30 kg packs.

If two of these problems apply, solve the costlier one first. Flap folding and self-sizing are separate machines in our range; one model does not do both.

102TR or the auto size adjust model: how do the two self-sizing sealers differ?

Both reset themselves to each carton and both run on compressed air. The differences are weight, power and what is published about them.

• The 102TR pneumatic automatic carton sealer weighs 150 kg, draws 220 W and takes 48, 60 or 76 mm tape in BOPP, PVC or water free type.
• The PackForge auto size adjust sealer weighs about 250 to 300 kg, draws about 0.4 kW on single phase 230 V and is rated at roughly 500 to 700 mixed cartons an hour.
• The 102TR also lists its table height, 600 to 780 mm, which helps when it must meet an existing roller bed.

Send your smallest and largest carton with the share of daily volume each takes. Boxes under 180 x 100 mm fall below the 102TR range and are better on a small-carton machine.

Is your floor ready for an automatic sealer?

Most delays after delivery come from the site, not the machine. Check these before you order:

1. Air at the spot: pressure at the point of use, hose length from the compressor and whether other tools share the line. Dry, filtered air matters as much as pressure.
2. Power: the 102TR and random model run on single phase; the 5050Z and 5050J list 220 V / 50 Hz or 110 V / 60 Hz.
3. Floor space: the 102TR is about 1970 x 660 mm, the random model about 1,700 x 900 mm, the 5050Z base about 830 x 920 mm and the 5050J about 1955 x 1060 mm.
4. Weight and route in: the 5050J weighs 400 kg, so plan the door, ramp and lifting gear.
5. Infeed and outfeed: cartons must arrive square and leave in a straight line; roller tables often serve.

When is a semi automatic sealer still the smarter buy?

Automatic machines cost more to buy, need air and take more floor. They pay back only when the job they remove is real. A semi automatic machine is usually enough when:

• Three or fewer carton sizes cover most of the day, and size changes are a few minutes once or twice a shift.
• There is no compressor on site and none is planned.
• The packer folds flaps anyway while checking contents.
