Secondary vs tertiary pharma packing: where does a carton sealer fit?

Pharma packing happens in layers, and a carton sealer works only on the outermost one.

• Primary pack: the strip, blister, bottle or vial that touches the medicine.
• Secondary pack: the printed mono carton that holds one strip set or bottle, with the leaflet. Cartoning machines fill and close these.
• Tertiary pack (shipper): the corrugated outer that holds many mono cartons for the distributor, C&F agent or hospital store. This is where a carton sealer works.

To be clear: PackForge carton sealers are not cartoning machines. They do not fold or load mono cartons. They close the top and bottom flaps of corrugated shippers with BOPP tape, at the end of the packing line or in the dispatch hall.

A carton sealing machine for pharma is therefore judged on shipper work: small and light boxes in large numbers, a clean and repeatable seal, and clear space for the batch details printed on the outer.

What does a pharma shipper need from its seal?

A medicine shipper is rarely heavy, so strength is not the main worry. These points matter more:

1. A seal that looks the same on every box. Distributors check inbound cartons, and a crooked or doubled strip raises questions about whether the box was opened.
2. Clear print panels. Batch number, expiry, product name and storage text are printed or labelled on the outer. Tape must not run over them.
3. A seam that shows interference. A cut or re-taped seam should be obvious at the receiving end.
4. Steady handling of small boxes. Many shippers are narrow or short, and a standard sealer cannot hold them straight.
5. Fast changeover. Contract and loan-licence units pack different brands in different shipper sizes, sometimes in the same week.

Which carton sealer for pharma suits which shipper?

The 102TUS, 102TU and 5050J list 500 mm as the largest width and height; send your largest shipper and we will confirm the fit on the other models. A distributor or C&F warehouse re-packing mixed orders is a different job, closer to e-commerce dispatch, and suits a self-adjusting random sealer. Small shippers: why do they slip on a standard sealer?

A full-size sealer is built around ordinary shipper cartons. Feed it a box only a little wider than a hand and the side belts barely touch it. The box twists, the tape lands off-centre, or the carton stalls under the top head.

The 102TUS is set up for this range. It holds cartons from about 80 to 90 mm, adjusts width and height quickly, and has roller beds at both infeed and outfeed so short boxes do not tip as they enter and leave. It runs on a normal 220 V supply, draws about 200 W and uses 36 or 48 mm tape, which suits the small flaps of a narrow shipper better than 3-inch tape would.

For a smaller unit sending modest numbers of small outers each day, the compact sealer is the lighter option. It weighs about 100 to 120 kg, stands free and draws roughly 0.2 kW, so it can move when the dispatch room is rearranged. Batch details and print space: where should the tape go?

On a pharma shipper the most expensive packing mistake is not a split carton. It is the right product leaving in a shipper with the wrong batch or expiry details. Two habits reduce that risk:

• Keep tape off the print panel. The machine lays tape along the centre seam and folds a short leg down each end face. Choose a tape width that clears the printed or labelled area, and check where the end legs land on your artwork before the first batch runs.
• Put the sealer after the coder or labeller. The operator who closes the box is the last person who can read the batch text. If the sealer stands before the coding step, nobody on the line checks it.

Is an H-seal worth it for medicines?

Most domestic pharma shippers travel well with a centre seam on top and bottom. An H-seal adds a strip along both end edges of each face, so the carton shows a letter H. It makes a box much harder to open without visible damage.

It is worth considering for:

• High-value products, where a missing strip set is costly.
• Shippers handled by several transporters and warehouses on a long route.
• Export consignments, where the buyer's packing note may ask for edge taping. See carton sealing machine for export.

The 5050J does this on one machine. It takes packs from 2.5 to 30 kg, needs an air line at 0.5 to 0.6 MPa, and will not accept a box under 320 x 200 x 180 mm, so it does not suit small shippers. The frame weighs about 400 kg and needs a level floor.

What should a pharma buyer ask before ordering?

Regulated plants document their equipment, so it helps to settle these points in writing with the quotation rather than after delivery.

• Certification. PackForge does not claim GMP certification or validation support for its carton sealers. They are dispatch machines for the packing or shipping hall, not for a clean room or product-contact area.
• Material of construction. If your SOP asks for frame material or finish, ask with the enquiry and we will state it in writing on the quotation.
• Datasheet. A model datasheet comes with the quotation on request.
• Invoice and warranty. Each machine is billed on a GST invoice and carries 12 months' cover against manufacturing defects; wear parts are excluded.
• Vendor forms. Send your vendor onboarding or quality questionnaire with the enquiry and it comes back with the quotation.
