What does the Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh belt pack?

Baddi, Barotiwala and Nalagarh sit together in Solan district, on the Himachal side of the border with Haryana and Punjab. The belt grew on industrial incentives and is now one of the country's biggest clusters for pharmaceutical formulations, with FMCG, personal care and packaging converters working alongside. Three carton types fill most of its dispatch bays:

Why does a pharma shipper suit a fixed-size sealer?

A formulation line usually fills one shipper size for a whole batch, sometimes for a whole week. That is the easiest job a carton sealer can get. You set the side belts and the top head to the box once, and every carton after that gets the same centred strip and the same leg length at both ends.

Consistency is the real gain. A stockist's receiving clerk notices a crooked or short seal, and in a regulated trade a carton that looks opened raises questions about the batch inside it. A machine removes the difference between one packer's hand taping and another's.

One layout point is worth fixing early. If a batch code or label is printed on the shipper, keep the sealer after the coding station and leave the code panel in view of the person feeding the machine. How do contract manufacturers run many brands on one sealer?

A large share of Baddi's capacity is third-party and loan-licence manufacture. The same packing hall may close one brand owner's shippers on Monday and another's on Thursday, each with its own carton size and sometimes its own tape. That makes changeover the main question, not speed.

1. Write the settings down. For each brand, note the belt width and head height once the first carton seals cleanly. Mark the scale on the frame so the next shift returns to the same point instead of finding it by eye.
2. Keep a tape per brand. Some brand owners ask for printed or coloured tape. Keep each roll labelled and change it with the setting.
3. Let the machine adjust itself when sizes change several times a shift. The 102TR reads each carton with air pressure, so mixed brand sizes can follow one another without anyone turning a handle.

How does a sealer travel from Faridabad to Baddi?

What should a QA team check before approving a sealer?

Plants in this belt usually buy through a quality or engineering team that needs facts on paper. Ask for these with the quotation:

1. Minimum and maximum carton size for the model, against your smallest and largest shipper.
2. Tape widths the heads accept, against the width your brand owners specify.
3. Power supply. The semi automatic, compact, 102TU and 102TUS models run on single-phase supply; the 102TR and 5050Z also need compressed air.
4. Table height range, so the machine lines up with your packing table or conveyor.
5. The datasheet, which comes with the quotation on request.

Do FMCG and personal care units in the belt need a different machine?

Often, yes. A case of soaps or shampoo bottles is heavier than a pharma shipper and is stacked higher in a distributor's godown. Two changes help. First, move to 3-inch tape, which the 102TU accepts, so each flap is held over a wider strip. Second, if cases are stacked very high or travel long distances, add a strap over the tape at a separate strapping station.
