What does a box sealing machine do?

It closes a packed corrugated box with BOPP tape on the top and bottom seams in one pass. The packer folds the flaps, places the box on the infeed and lets go; belts carry it past two tape heads that apply, press and cut the tape. Many buyers call it a box taping machine. Technically it is the same equipment we list as a carton sealing machine, so specifications and spares are shared across both names.

This page looks at the question from the box side: which boxes the machine handles well, which it does not, and how box type and board grade point to the right model.

Which boxes can a box sealing machine close?

The machine is built for the regular slotted carton, the brown shipper whose top and bottom each have four flaps. The two long flaps meet in a straight line down the middle, and that joint is where the tape runs. Most dispatch boxes made by Indian corrugators follow this style.

Some boxes are a poor match:

• Tuck-top mailer boxes used for online orders close with a folded lid and often a peel strip. There is no centre seam to tape, so a sealer adds little.
• Die-cut boxes with odd shapes may not run straight between the belts.
• Telescopic lid boxes, where a separate top slides over the base, are usually taped across the sides by hand.

Use this table as a first filter. The final choice still depends on your smallest and largest size and how many boxes leave in an hour.

Does the ply of a corrugated box change the machine?

Ply changes how the box behaves at the infeed more than which machine you need. A corrugated box sealing machine handles 3, 5 and 7-ply board, but each grade asks for a little care.

• 3-ply: light and flexible. Fill it fully so the walls stay flat between the belts.
• 5-ply: the everyday dispatch grade. Runs well once the guides are set to the box.
• 7-ply: stiff flaps spring back after folding. Fold them firmly just before the infeed so they do not catch the top head.

Heavier boxes also benefit from wider tape, because it covers more of each flap. A cardboard box sealing machine for thin, single-wall cartons works the same way, but very soft board can crease where the belts touch.

Is your box ready for the machine?

A machine repeats whatever it is given, so a badly packed box comes out badly sealed. Check these points on your packing table:

1. Fill to the brim. A bulging top pushes the seam apart; a half-empty box sags under the head.
2. Close short flaps first, then long flaps, so the joint is straight.
3. Keep boxes square. A box that leans will run crooked.
4. Store flat boxes off the floor and covered. Damp board does not hold tape well.
5. Wipe dusty flaps before sealing, because dust stops the adhesive from gripping.

These habits cost nothing and often fix seal problems blamed on the machine.

Box sealing machine or a hand tape gun?

A tape gun is cheap and flexible, but the packer must flip every box to tape the bottom, and seal length varies with each hand. A machine tapes both seams together and lays the same tape length every time. The switch usually pays when one box size runs for long spells, or when bottom seams start opening in the godown.
