Why hand taping turns into the bottleneck

Most dispatch rooms have sped up picking with scanners and labelling with thermal printers, yet the box is still closed by hand: tape pulled across the top, edges smoothed, carton turned over for the bottom. On sale days, at month-end billing for FMCG stockists, or in the hour before the courier van arrives, packers get pulled onto taping and the pile simply moves down the table.

A carton sealing machine turns that job into a push. The packer folds the flaps and feeds the box, and side belts carry it past heads that tape top and bottom together. Signs you have reached this point:

• Packed but unsealed cartons waiting before pickup
• Packers leaving their own work to help tape at busy hours
• Strips of every length, some doubled over, on one consignment

A uniform seal helps with returns and tamper disputes

For a marketplace seller, a parcel that arrives looking disturbed starts an argument: opened in transit, or sent half closed? When every box leaves with an identical strip in an identical position, the receiver can tell your seal from a redone one, and your returns desk spots a re-taped carton at a glance.

Mixed carton sizes: when a random sealer pays its way

In online retail the order picks the box: a phone cover in one, a set of steel containers in the next. A fixed-size sealer needs resetting at every change, so odd sizes drift back to hand taping. A random sealer reads each carton and adjusts itself:

First count the sizes you used in a normal week. If two or three dominate, batching orders by box size on a semi automatic machine may do the job for far less. More on the random sealer range.

Small cartons from pharma, cosmetics and accessory sellers

Belts need something to grip. The PackForge 102TU lists a minimum carton of L150 x W170 x H110 mm, and tablet strips, serum boxes and earphone cartons often ship in smaller outers than that. Two models suit this end:

Combining taping with strapping

Heavy FMCG cases, bulk B2B orders for retailers and cartons facing long road journeys are often strapped too, which usually means a second person lifting and squaring each box again. The PackForge 102PLS mounts an inline strapping arch after the taping head, so both happen as the carton passes once, rated at 20 cartons a minute. Choose it when most cartons need both. If only a handful of heavy orders get strapped, a separate strapper on a side bench stays more flexible.

Placing the sealer in a packing line

The carton should never be carried to the sealer. A workable order:

1. Pack at the table, invoice and void fill inside.
2. Fold flaps at the table end, at the sealer's infeed.
3. Feed the carton through.
4. Label and weigh on the outfeed, on rollers or a plain table.
5. Stage by courier partner.

Match the machine's table height to the packing table so boxes slide across; the semi automatic model adjusts from about 580 to 780 mm. Allow its length plus room at both ends: the 102TU is 1,052 mm long, the 102TR 1,970 mm. Electric models run on an ordinary single phase socket; pneumatic ones also need an air line, so fix the compressor spot first. Keep labels off the centre strip of the top face so tape never crosses a barcode.

Choosing tape for dispatch cartons

Each head is built for set widths. The 102TU runs 2 or 3 inch rolls, the pneumatic 102TR accepts three widths from 48 to 76 mm, and the 102TUS uses narrower tape, as its product page lists. Wider tape grips large or heavy boxes better; narrow tape looks tidier on small ones. Buy machine-length rolls so changes are fewer, and mention your board, since recycled corrugated and cold-room storage both affect adhesion. Options are on BOPP tape rolls.
