Which cartons does Kolkata seal most?

Kolkata is the main trading and stocking point for the eastern states and the North-East. Burrabazar wholesalers and the godowns around the city take goods in bulk and send them on to Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Assam. That role shapes the cartons. Three groups come up again and again when Kolkata buyers ask us about sealing:

• Redistribution cartons. Company cases are broken open at a distributor or C&F godown, and mixed lots for retailers are packed into whatever outer is at hand.
• Packet tea shippers. Kolkata has long been a centre of the tea trade and its auctions, and blending and packing units fill corrugated shippers with 250 g, 500 g or 1 kg packets.
• Hardware and engineering boxes. Howrah's foundries, fabricators and machine-parts traders pack small, heavy cartons.

How should a distributor seal repacked FMCG cartons?

A distributor's outer arrives sealed from the company, is cut open, partly emptied and refilled with a mix of products for a retailer two states away. The second closure is where problems start:

1. Old tape on the flaps. New tape laid half on old tape and half on board grips only the board part. Peel the old strip, or lay the new strip so it covers the old one fully and reaches clean board on both sides.
2. Part-filled boxes. A carton with an empty top third caves in under the next box in the stack. Fill the void with crumpled paper or move the lot to a smaller outer.
3. Many sizes in one evening. Re-packed outers come in every size the companies use.

That last point decides the machine. If two or three sizes cover most of the evening's dispatch, the semi automatic sealer with a manual size change is enough. If the sizes cannot be predicted, the auto size adjust random sealer reads each carton and resets itself, at about 500 to 700 mixed cartons an hour. It needs compressed air at 5 to 6 bar, so check your compressor first.

What does a packet tea shipper need from a sealer?

Tea packing units usually run one shipper size per pack size for long spells, which suits a fixed-size machine well. The weight is moderate, so standard 2-inch tape is normally enough for a shipper of packets; ask us if your load is heavier than usual.

The one tea-specific issue is dust. Fine tea dust settles on the flaps at the filling table, and tape sticks to the dust rather than the board. Keep the flap area clean before the box reaches the sealer, and brush the tape rollers at the end of each shift so dust does not build up on them.

Howrah and Dankuni: heavy boxes and busy warehouses

Howrah. Across the river, the foundries and light engineering units of the Howrah belt send out castings, fittings and hardware in cartons that are small for their weight. Here the seal has to carry load, not just close a lid. Run 3-inch tape, keep the end legs long and strap the box when the contents are near the board's limit. Dankuni. Where the Durgapur Expressway leaves the national highway, Dankuni has grown into a warehousing and freight point for the city. A warehouse line there usually means a steady flow of cartons from a conveyor. A fixed sealer at the end of the line handles one dominant size; the 102TR pneumatic sealer adjusts to mixed sizes and accepts 48, 60 or 76 mm tape, with a small compressor of 2 / 3 litre at 5 bar.

How do you keep a sealer running through the wet months?

The long humid season is hard on the machine as well as the board. Four habits help from June to September:

• Cover the machine at night if the godown shutter stays open, so damp air and dust do not settle on the belts.
• Wipe the cutter blade dry and give it a light film of oil each week; a rusty blade tears tape instead of cutting it.
• Keep spare tape rolls in a closed box, raised off the floor, and use older stock first.
• Check that the tape legs still run well down each face. A short leg on soft, damp board is the first place a seam opens.
