Laying out before buying

A greenfield plant is the one case where the layout can be decided before the equipment, and doing it that way is worth more than any discount.

The single biggest saving is not handling a pallet twice. If the wrapper sits away from the dispatch bay, every pallet is moved once to wrap and again to load — an extra movement per pallet for the life of the building. Putting the wrapper in the last bay before the dock removes it entirely.

The second is deciding where cartons are made up. Sealing where the goods are produced and palletising near the dock beats carrying loose cartons across a shed, and it usually means fewer machines rather than more.

FMCG volumes, and the cost that is not the machine

An FMCG plant's packing cost is dominated by consumables rather than by equipment, and film is the largest single line in it.

A wrapper set badly uses half again as much film as one set properly. At Pantnagar volumes that difference exceeds the machine's price within a year or two, which makes the commissioning setting worth more attention than the purchase price.

Film force and the number of top wraps are the two settings that matter, and they should be set against your own loads rather than left at a factory default. It is the one thing on this page that pays for itself repeatedly.

Tape is the same argument at a smaller scale: core size and width matched to the machine, and the roll kept off a cold floor in winter.

Auto assembly and returnable packing

The vehicle and component plants here run on returnable bins and pallets that come back, and how they are treated on the way out is a cost you carry.

Film taken round a pallet deck rather than anchored at the foot drags on the boards and lifts slats over a few cycles. That is a machine setting rather than an operator habit, which means it can be set once and left.

Where a customer's packing standard exists, send it with the enquiry — it already contains the pallet size, stack height and wrap pattern the machine has to be sized against, and reading it is faster than describing your product.

Winter, and a detail that only matters here

Pantnagar gets genuinely cold, and two things behave differently when it does.

Tape adhesive tacks less on a cold carton. A seal that is fine in October opens in January, and the fix is not stronger tape — it is letting the tape and the cartons reach room temperature before the run, and keeping rolls off the floor. If your sealing complaints are seasonal, that is the answer and it costs nothing to test.

Stretch film behaves differently cold too. It pre-stretches less and can split at the same force setting that worked in summer. A wrapper that starts breaking film in winter is usually asking for a lower force rather than a new roll.

Neither is a fault. Both are worth knowing before somebody spends a week diagnosing the machine.

Distance from a supplier base, and what to hold

Pantnagar's plants are modern and well equipped, and the constraint that catches them is not the machine — it is that the nearest supplier of anything is a long way away.

Hold consumables deeper than you would in an NCR plant. Film and tape are the obvious ones, and a plant that runs out of film on a Friday afternoon loses the despatch rather than the film. That is inventory rather than equipment, and it is the single most useful thing to plan when the supply chain is long.

On wear parts, the same rule with a shorter list: the heating element on a strapping machine, the blades on a sealer, the film carriage rollers on a wrapper, the wheels and seal kit on a pallet truck. Buy them with the machine.

And keep the original packing for anything that might need to come back. A machine returned in a carton it was not made for arrives damaged, and at this distance that turns a small problem into a long one.

The same applies to the paperwork. Keep the invoice and the despatch note with the machine rather than in an accounts file — a warranty question answered in five minutes with a reference is a different conversation from one that starts with a search.
