This is worth settling before anything else, because a food plant's auditor will ask.

The shipper, and why food cartons fail differently

A food shipper carries weight in a box that is often not very strong, and it spends part of its life somewhere cold or damp. Board loses strength when it takes up moisture, and a carton that was fine at despatch is not fine after a night in a chill room.

Much of that loss can be made up with strap. A carton that has gone soft keeps its shape under a stack when two straps are round it, which tape by itself cannot achieve. Keep the tension moderate, though, because a hard-pulled strap slices into the edge of damp board.

As for closing the box, tape laid evenly by a machine is better than tape pulled from a hand dispenser, and on a printed shipper anyone can see the difference. If your shipper size stays the same, use a semi automatic carton sealer; if it keeps changing, tape by hand and strap.

Date coding, and the check that belongs at the end of the line

Every food or FMCG shipper is printed with a batch and a date, and the costliest packing mistake made in this belt is not a split carton but the right goods sent out under the wrong code.

The coding sits upstream of everything on this page, and to be clear, coders are not something we supply. Our advice is simply to check the code where the carton is sealed, since the operator closing the box is the last one with a view of it — put the sealer ahead of the coder and the code goes out unchecked.

When you plan a new line with a sealer or strapper on it, position the machine after the coder and make sure the operator can read the printed panel. At the drawing stage that is free; once the line is running it is almost impossible to correct.

Buying from the other end of the NCR

Kundli sits north of Delhi and our works are south of it, so this is the longest intra-NCR move we make. It is still a road move.

A machine often arrives while the new line around it is still being built. If yours will be kept in storage before installation, let us know: a machine that has to wait in a store needs different packing from one that will be unpacked on arrival.
