Unlike in the older estates, nothing in Greater Noida is a bench-machine problem. Goods are palletised early and stay palletised, and the packing decisions are about the pallet rather than the box.
A turntable stretch wrapper is the centre of that, and its real cost is film rather than price. A wrapper set badly uses half again as much film as one set properly; at a large shed's dispatch volumes that difference exceeds the machine's price inside a couple of years. Film force and the number of top wraps are the two settings that matter and they should be set against your own loads.
For appliance and building-product pallets — tall, sometimes uneven — a top press earns its place. For heavy pallets going a long way, the pallet is strapped to its load as well as wrapped.
A fulfilment shed packs whatever the order contains, so the carton height changes every few seconds and the operator is often temporary. A machine that needs adjusting between boxes will not be adjusted — it will be bypassed, and you find out three weeks later.
An automatic random carton sealing machine measures each carton and seals top and bottom without an operator decision. At these volumes it replaces several hand taping positions and, more importantly, gives a consistent seal — a badly taped box is a box the courier re-measures and re-charges.
The caution is the sensor. It can miss a very light-coloured or glossy carton, and the sensitivity has to be set against your actual cartons rather than a sample. It is a setting, not a fault, but it should be done at commissioning.
A modern shed has the one thing older estates do not: a level floor. That changes the wheel decision, and it is worth taking advantage of.
Nylon wheels are quieter and cheaper on a good floor and will last. Polyurethane costs more and is what you specify when the floor is bad. On a new shed, nylon is usually the right answer, and we will say so rather than upsell.
Capacity should still be chosen against your heaviest pallet with a margin. A truck run permanently at its rated load loses its seals early wherever it runs.
A shed that despatches to a retail calendar does four or five times its normal volume for a few weeks a year, and the usual answer is temporary staff.
That is often right, and it is worth saying so. A machine sized for the peak stands idle for ten months; people can be hired for six weeks. Where the peak is genuinely short, hands beat capital, and we will tell you that rather than quote for the peak.
Where it stops being right is consistency. Temporary staff seal cartons to a temporary standard, and a courier re-measuring a badly taped box costs the same in November as in June. The machine that earns its place in a seasonal shed is usually the one that removes an operator decision rather than the one that runs fastest.
A new site is the one case where buying everything at once is genuinely cheaper than buying it in pieces, and it is worth saying so at the enquiry rather than after the first machine.
Tell us the plan — how many wrapping points, how many sealing positions, how many trucks, and over what period — and the quotation is written against the total. Coming back later and asking for the same rate on one machine is a harder conversation.
Site conditions decide the commissioning: power, floor, and where each machine will stand. Send those with the enquiry and the visit is planned around them rather than discovered on the day.
A new shed is usually designed around the dock, and the packing equipment is placed afterwards, in whatever space is left. That is the wrong way round and it is easy to fix while the building is still empty.
A wrapped pallet should not have to be moved twice. If the wrapper sits away from the dock, every pallet is handled once to wrap it and again to bring it to the door, which is a whole extra movement per pallet for the life of the building. Putting the wrapper in the last bay before the dock removes it.
The second thing worth deciding early is the trailer mix. A dock levelled for one trailer height is awkward for another, and a shed that receives on 20-foot vehicles and despatches on 40-foot ones is doing two different jobs at the same door. That is not our equipment, but it decides where our equipment should go, and it is much cheaper to think about now.
