Strapping a load that fights back

Pipes in a bundle, sheet in a stack and castings in a crate all act differently from a box. Over the first few kilometres the goods bed down and the tension drops off, and a loose strap on a moving truck does more harm than having none, since it gives the pieces room to shift against each other.

There are two remedies. One is a tension you can dial in and get again on the next bundle — the real advantage a semi automatic strapping machine has over a hand tool. The other, for bundles too heavy or too awkward ever to pass through an arch, is to take a pneumatic strapping tool to the load itself: it runs on compressed air, pulls the strap tight, welds it and cuts it in a single cycle, and reaches a tightness no arm can.

Strap specification matters more here than anywhere. Width and thickness are what decide the break load, and a machine set for one will not run the other well. Send the strap you use — or a photograph of the reel label — with the enquiry.

Drums, and the reason people get hurt moving them

Lifting a 200-litre drum properly takes two people, yet one person usually tries it — and Ghaziabad's chemical, paint and lubricant units handle drums in large numbers. It is the moment of tipping, not the lift itself, where people get injured.

A drum carrier and lifter takes the tipping point out. The jaw grips the rim, the hydraulic jack raises it, and a safety lock holds it — that last part is the feature worth checking before you buy anything, because a drum lifter without a reliable lock is a drum lifter that will eventually lower under load.

Pallets on a floor that has seen some use

An engineering shop floor is nothing like a warehouse floor: weld spatter, fallen swarf, patches of oil and expansion joints that catch a small wheel. On a surface like that it is the wheels of a pallet truck that give up first, well before the hydraulics or the frame.

Order the truck with polyurethane wheels from the start; on such ground they outlast nylon by a wide margin, and swapping them in after half a year is money spent twice. Of the two sets, the load wheels are worked much harder than the steer wheels, so a spare set of load wheels is the one to keep.

Size the truck to your heaviest pallet with something in hand, not to the typical one; a truck worked at its rated limit every day wears out its seals early.

When a wrapper is the wrong answer

On a page about heavy goods it is fair to admit that stretch wrapping is often not the answer. Wrapping film keeps the pieces of a load together but cannot pin them to the pallet. Sheet stacks and pipe bundles need strapping, and on a pallet the strap usually has to run round the pallet and the goods together, not just round the goods.

Where a wrapper does belong in Ghaziabad is on palletised finished goods that are light for their volume — packaged components, hardware, fittings. A turntable stretch wrapper is the machine, and its cost is dominated by the film it uses rather than by its price.
