Who buys one, and why

The pattern is consistent across trades: whenever the bag has something in it that makes it awkward, the pedal wins.

• Food and grocery packing - a bag of loose grain, pulses, flour or masala will not hold its own mouth open and square.
• Garment and hosiery - large flat bags that need both hands simply to keep the mouth from folding over.
• Hardware and spares - heavy small parts pull the bag out of shape as soon as one hand lets go.
• Courier and e-commerce - a filled polybag on a busy despatch bench, sealed a few hundred times a day.

Impulse pedal or hot bar pedal

There are two kinds in this format and the difference is the same one that runs through the whole cluster. An impulse foot sealer heats only during the cycle, is cold when idle and needs no warm-up. A hot bar foot sealer holds its bars at temperature, which is what a thicker or laminated material often needs.

If your pouch has been sealing unevenly on an impulse machine, the hot bar version in the same format is usually the next thing to try - same posture, same bench, different heat.

What to check about your bench before ordering

A foot machine needs floor space under the bench for the pedal and for the operator to stand square to it. A machine tucked into a corner with the pedal at an angle is worse than the hand machine it replaced.

It also needs the bag to arrive at the right height. If the operator is lifting a heavy bag up to the jaws on every cycle, the pedal has solved one problem and created another. Say how the bag reaches the machine and we will factor it in.

When you have gone past this format too

A foot machine is still one bag at a time. Once bags are queuing rather than being brought to the machine, no pedal keeps up, and the answer is a continuous band sealer where bags feed through on a belt.

Two people, one machine

A foot sealer changes something on a busy bench that is easy to miss when you are comparing specifications: it lets two people work at one machine.

Because the operator's hands are free and the pedal does the closing, one person can hold and present the bag while another fills or passes the next one. On a hand-pressed machine that arrangement does not work, because the person holding the bag has to let go of it to press the bar.

For seasonal businesses this matters more than it sounds. A namkeen or sweet unit that doubles its output for a fortnight around a festival cannot buy and learn a new machine for two weeks, but it can put a second pair of hands on the one it has.

It also changes how a machine is shared. A pedal is height-neutral in a way a bar is not, so a machine used by several people of different heights suits more of them.

If your peaks are short and sharp rather than steady, say so at the enquiry. It is an argument for this format that a daily average would never reveal.
