What to check about your bench before ordering

A foot machine needs floor space under the bench for the pedal and for the operator to stand square to it. A machine tucked into a corner with the pedal at an angle is worse than the hand machine it replaced.

It also needs the bag to arrive at the right height. If the operator is lifting a heavy bag up to the jaws on every cycle, the pedal has solved one problem and created another. Say how the bag reaches the machine and we will factor it in.

A foot machine is still one bag at a time. Once bags are queuing rather than being brought to the machine, no pedal keeps up, and the answer is a continuous band sealer where bags feed through on a belt.

Two people, one machine

A foot sealer changes something on a busy bench that is easy to miss when you are comparing specifications: it lets two people work at one machine.

Because the operator's hands are free and the pedal does the closing, one person can hold and present the bag while another fills or passes the next one. On a hand-pressed machine that arrangement does not work, because the person holding the bag has to let go of it to press the bar.

For seasonal businesses this matters more than it sounds. A namkeen or sweet unit that doubles its output for a fortnight around a festival cannot buy and learn a new machine for two weeks, but it can put a second pair of hands on the one it has.

It also changes how a machine is shared. A pedal is height-neutral in a way a bar is not, so a machine used by several people of different heights suits more of them.

If your peaks are short and sharp rather than steady, say so at the enquiry. It is an argument for this format that a daily average would never reveal.

Pedal sealing machine models and price

The FS Series pedal impulse sealer comes in four seal lengths – 350, 450, 650 and 800 mm – with a 5 mm seal and 0 to 2.5 seconds of heating. The machines weigh 19 to 29 kg on their own pedestal stand, and the range starts at ₹19,353 + ₹3,484 GST. The FS300D / 400D uses a constantly heated bar for foil, metallised and laminated pouches, with a 10 mm seal across 300 or 400 mm, weighing 14 or 16 kg, from ₹30,284 + ₹5,451 GST. Both carry 12 months of cover on manufacturing defects, wear parts excluded.

Pedal or hand: the deciding question

Can one hand hold the bag flat while the other presses? If yes, a hand sealer costs far less. If the bag is heavy, floppy or long – a grain sack liner, a bundle of garments, a 10 kg pack – both hands belong on the bag and the pedal does the pressing. Who uses a pedal sealer

The FS Series stands on its own pedestal, so the bag hangs at working height while both hands hold it straight. That suits large, floppy bags of grain, garments or chemicals, which slip out of line on a hand sealer. Its impulse power runs from 1200 W on the 350 mm model to 1800 W on the 800 mm model, and heating lasts 0 to 2.5 seconds per press. Foil and laminated pouches of tea, coffee, spices, namkeen and pharma products go on the hot bar FS300D / 400D instead.

Plan the floor space too: the FS Series cases run from 450 × 540 × 880 mm on the FS350 to 855 × 570 × 880 mm on the FS800, and the FS300D / 400D from 345 × 485 × 880 mm to 445 × 485 × 880 mm. Leave room in front for the operator to stand with the bag held in both hands.
