The Faridabad industrial belt — Sectors 24, 25 and 27, running back into the older NIT estates — is forging, auto components, castings, fasteners, machine shops and the engineering that supports them. It is dense, it is old, and it makes things that are heavy for their size.

What is made in Sectors 24, 25 and 27

Forging shops, foundries, machining units, fastener plants and a long tail of component suppliers to the auto and tractor industry. The characteristic output is a metal part: dense, oily when it leaves the machine, and shipped by weight rather than by volume.

The other half of the belt is the shops that serve those plants — tool rooms, heat treatment, plating, and the traders in bar stock and consumables who keep them running. Their packing is smaller and more varied, but it is the same material.

What this means for packing is simple and it is the opposite of what a warehouse needs. Nothing here is light. Nothing is fragile in the way a carton of electronics is fragile. The failures are burst cartons, slipped pallets and people hurt lifting.

The packing problem a forging or machining unit has

A carton of forged or machined parts is compact but very heavy for its size, and when it sits under a stack it gives way along the bottom seam. Tape can close that seam, but carrying the weight is a job for two straps — which is why units in this belt usually pair a carton sealer, to close the box, with a strapper, to bear the load.

Past a certain weight you stop shipping boxes and start shipping pallets. The decision then is where the strap runs: round the goods, round the pallet, or round the two together — and with parts that tend to shift, it is generally the two together. Where the load is too big for any arch, a pneumatic strapping tool is used directly on it.

Oil is the quiet problem. Parts that leave a machining centre carry cutting fluid, and a carton that has absorbed oil loses most of its strength. That is a liner and a wrap question before it is a machine question, and it is worth solving first — no strapping machine rescues a carton that has gone soft.

Moving weight on a Faridabad shop floor

No floor treats a pallet truck worse than a forge or machine shop does — scale, swarf and oil on a surface that has been patched again and again. The wheels are the first thing to go on such a floor, and they go well before their time.

Ask for polyurethane load wheels when you order; in these conditions they far outlive nylon, which would otherwise need replacing within about six months. Pick the capacity to suit your heaviest pallet plus some headroom — a truck that always works at its rating wears through its seals early, and changing a seal kit on a shop floor is nobody's idea of a good afternoon.

Oil is the part that catches people out. A wheel that is fine on a dry floor loses grip on one with a film of coolant on it, and a loaded truck that slides is a truck that is steering the operator rather than the other way round. If the floor really is coated in oil, cleaning it up comes before choosing a wheel, and we will tell you that plainly instead of selling you wheels that cannot fix the problem.

Drums of oil, coolant and quench fluid need a drum carrier and lifter fitted with a safety lock that can be relied on. Everything hinges on that lock — if it cannot be trusted, sooner or later the lifter will let a loaded drum down.

Two things follow from it, and neither is a promise about time.

Strap, tape and the specification that actually matters

In this belt a fault blamed on the machine is more often down to the strap. The strap's width and thickness fix its break load; a machine adjusted to 0.55 mm strap runs badly on 0.63 mm, and strap chosen purely for its price tends to vary from one batch to the next.

So when a strapper you already have starts misbehaving, look at the strap before ringing anyone about the machine — it is the usual culprit, and by far the cheapest thing to put right.

When we will tell you not to buy a machine

This belt is full of people who can make things, and that changes the honest answer to some enquiries.

A jig to hold a part while it is strapped, a roller table to feed a sealer, a stand at the right height for a bench machine — these come up constantly, and in Sector 24 you have a fabricator two gates away who will make any of them better and cheaper than buying it. We will say so. Selling somebody a stand they could have welded in an afternoon is not a sale worth having in a city where everyone knows everyone.

The line we draw is at the parts that decide whether the machine works: the tension assembly, the heating element, the sealing head, the hydraulics. Those are not a fabrication job, and a machine running on a locally made version of one of them is a machine we cannot stand behind.

Where a purchase genuinely pays is in repeating a setting. Anyone can tighten one strap well; nobody tightens four hundred straps to an identical tension, and that sameness is the real reason to own the machine. If your problem is that packing quality varies with who is on shift, that is exactly the problem a machine solves. If it is that a part is awkward to hold, talk to your neighbour first.
