What a tractor or forging supply chain ships

Sub-assemblies, castings, forged parts, sheet metal pressings and fabricated structures. Heavy, dense, often oily, and frequently too awkward to box at all.

A large share of it is crated or palletised rather than cartoned, which moves the packing question away from sealing entirely. What matters is whether the load stays on the pallet and whether the pallet stays together.

The other constant is that the receiving plant runs to a schedule. A late or damaged consignment is a line-stop conversation, which is why the tension setting on a strapping tool is worth more attention here than the machine's price.

Strapping heavy and awkward

A crate of castings or a bundle of pressings will not go through an arch, so the tool goes to the load. A pneumatic strapping tool tensions, seals and cuts in one action at a tension no person reaches by hand.

Your air supply decides whether it performs. Line pressure and available flow are what we need to confirm the tool against — an underperforming tool is nearly always an air problem rather than a tool problem.

For boxed parts and palletised cartons a semi automatic strapping machine is faster and more repeatable. Most plants in this belt end up with one of each, and it is worth planning for that at the first purchase rather than discovering it at the second.

Handling weight, and the drums that come with it

Two things are moved in a tractor and forging supply chain that do not appear on a warehouse's list at all.

The long awkward load. A shaft, an axle, a frame member or a welded structure is not a pallet and will not sit on one. It is carried by two people who cannot see each other past it, which is how backs and fingers get hurt. A purpose-shaped material handling trolley is unglamorous and it is the correct answer; a pallet truck used for a job it was not made for is how the load ends up on somebody's foot.

The hot drum. Quench and heat-treatment oil comes out warm and sometimes hot, and a hot drum is not a cold drum: the contents move more, the drum is more slippery to grip, and a jaw that holds a cold one can slide. Where drums are handled warm, say so — it changes the margin we would recommend, and it is not something a datasheet asks about.

For everything else on this floor, the ordinary rules hold: polyurethane wheels rather than nylon on scale and swarf, and capacity chosen against your heaviest pallet rather than your average.

Packing evidence, and what an audit asks for

A tier-1 or tier-2 supplier into tractor and automotive assembly gets audited, and packing turns up in the audit more often than suppliers expect.

What is usually asked for is not a certificate. It is evidence that the pack leaving your gate is the pack that was agreed: a photograph on despatch, a record of the tension or wrap setting in use, and a note of who checked it. None of that requires special equipment, and all of it is much easier when the setting is on a machine that holds it rather than in an operator's hands.

That is the quiet argument for a machine over a hand tool in an audited plant. A hand tool has no setting to record. A machine has a number you can write down, repeat and show, and when a consignment is queried six weeks later you can say what the pack was made to.
