Packing to a call-off rather than to a forecast

A Manesar plant does not despatch when it has finished making. It despatches when the customer's system calls for it, often several times a day, in quantities that were fixed that morning.

That is the constraint people underestimate when they buy packing machinery here. The machine is not asked to run flat out for eight hours; it is asked to be ready at eleven, and again at three, and to have nothing wrong with it in between. Utilisation is low and availability has to be total, which is close to the opposite of how a machine is usually justified.

Two consequences follow. A second, simpler machine is often a better purchase than a faster single one, because two machines that are each idle half the time will still despatch when one of them is down. And the wear parts belong on your own shelf rather than on ours, because a part that arrives tomorrow is a part that arrived after the call-off.

We would rather have that conversation before you buy than sell you the largest machine in the range. Tell us how many despatches a day and what the window is, and the answer follows from those two numbers rather than from your annual volume.

Line stoppage is the only cost that matters

Ask a Manesar plant what a packing machine costs and the honest answer is not the invoice — it is the worst hour it ever caused.

The parts that cause that hour are not expensive. On a wrapper it is the film carriage rollers; on a strapping machine the heating element; on a pallet truck the wheels and the seal kit. None of them is a large sum and all of them stop a despatch. Holding them in your own store removes the question entirely, and it is the cheapest thing on this page.

The second half is the visit that does not happen because of a breakdown. Plants here shut for maintenance on a known schedule, and a machine that is looked at during that window does not need to be looked at during production. Tell us your shutdown dates and the contract can be written round them.

What we will not do is print a response time. What we will do is tell you, on the call, what a visit involves and when — which is the number you can actually plan against.

Buying across the ring

The works are at the other end of the same expressway ring. That is a short haul by any measure, and the machine leaves run-tested and packed as though it were not.

The commercial detail worth raising early is the shape of the order rather than the distance. A plant that will add a second wrapping point next quarter and a third the quarter after is a different quotation from one buying a single machine, and the difference is real money. Say so while we are quoting, not afterwards.

For vendor onboarding, a quality questionnaire or a supplier declaration, send the form your purchase system uses and it comes back completed. Doing it alongside the quotation costs nothing; doing it at payment holds up the payment.

The pallet you will see again

Where the receiving plant runs pallet exchange, the pallet leaving your gate comes back to you, and how it is treated on the way is a cost you carry rather than one you pass on.

Wrapping practice decides most of it. Film taken round the pallet deck rather than anchored at the foot drags on the boards and lifts the top slats over a few cycles. Film pulled hard against a corner without protection splits the corner block. Neither shows up on the first trip, and both show up on the twentieth.

Anchoring at the foot and wrapping upward is the setting that saves the pallet, and it is a machine setting rather than an operator habit — which means it can be set once and left. It is the sort of thing nobody asks about when buying a wrapper and everybody notices two years in.

If the plant you supply charges you for damaged returns, bring that to the enquiry. It is a real number and it changes which machine is worth buying, in a way that pallets per hour usually does not.
