Working to a buyer's carton specification

Most export buyers issue a carton specification: dimensions, board grade, tape width, label position, sometimes the number of straps and where they go.

Attach that document to your enquiry. It saves a long list of questions, and it means the machine is matched to the cartons you really pack instead of to a loose description.

If the buyer's document asks for something a machine cannot deliver, you hear it from us before the order, not after. The usual sticking point is where the straps are meant to sit.

Sampling, and the stage where packing usually goes wrong

An export order goes through sampling and pre-production long before it goes through a packing line, and the packing decisions get made in those stages by people who are thinking about the garment.

What tends to happen is this. A senior person packs the sample by hand with great care, and it gets approved. Bulk production then packs many times faster, with the operator changing every shift, and the result no longer matches. When the buyer's inspector holds production up against that approved sample, the gap is in how it was packed, not in the garment.

So pack the sample exactly as the bulk order will be packed. Bulk going through a sealer and a strapper means the sample goes through them too, and if a machine will set the strap tension, set it now and write the figure down. Getting a sample approved that your own line cannot match only stores up trouble.

This is also the moment to find out whether the buyer's specification is achievable. If the standard asks for a strap position that the carton cannot take without an edge protector, better to know at sampling than at the first shipment.
