Printing and packaging converters

Okhla's printers ship reams, printed cartons flat, and finished jobs in bundles. The packing is nearly all bundling and strapping rather than sealing — a stack of printed sheets or flat cartons held tight enough to travel without slipping and loose enough not to mark the top sheet.

That is a tension question, and it is exactly what a machine does better than a person. A low table top strapping machine at the end of the finishing table is the standard answer here, because it sits at working height and takes almost no floor.

Where the bundle is heavy — reams of board, or a full pallet of flat cartons — the same tension argument applies but the machine is larger, and edge protectors stop the strap cutting into the top sheet.

Garment and export units

A garment carton is light, large and easily crushed, and it is usually packed to a buyer's specification down to the tape width. It does not burst — it arrives squashed, which is a stacking problem that packing can only partly solve.

Strap helps more than it looks like it should. Two straps hold a light carton's shape under a stack in a container far better than tape alone, and the tension has to be low enough not to cut the carton edge. That setting is worth getting right once with somebody who has done it.

For the polybag stage before boxing, a band or impulse sealer sized to the widest bag you use — the bag width, not the garment, is what decides the model.

Food processing and small pharmaceutical packing

Okhla's food and pharma units pack small and pack often, and they pack under rules somebody else wrote. The question we get asked most is not about speed — it is whether a machine meets a standard.

We will tell you honestly what a machine does and does not meet, and we will not claim a certification we do not hold. Send the requirement and the standard your unit works to and the answer comes back against them rather than as a brochure.

For the primary pack itself — pouches, bottles, trays — the relevant ranges are vacuum packaging, shrink packaging and, for liquids, filling and capping. Power, floor and the constraints Okhla actually has

Two practical things decide more Okhla purchases than the specification does.

The electrical point. Many of the machines that suit a bench here run on a single phase; some do not. Tell us what you have before we quote rather than after the machine arrives — it is the most common avoidable problem on a small-floor installation.

The stairs. A first- or second-floor unit with a narrow staircase rules out some machines entirely, and it is far better to know that at the enquiry than on delivery day. Send a photograph of the approach along with the carton size.

The shared loading bay, and packing to a time rather than a rate

Most Okhla units share their approach with several others, and a good number have no bay at all — the vehicle stands on the road and the goods go out past whatever else is happening.

That makes the packing constraint a time rather than a rate. It does not matter that a machine can do two hundred boxes an hour if the loading window is twenty minutes and the goods are not ready at the start of it. What matters is that everything is packed and stacked before the vehicle arrives.

The practical consequence is that buffer space beats machine speed here. A modest bench machine running through the afternoon, with the finished cartons stacked and ready, beats a faster machine that starts when the vehicle does. If you are choosing between a bigger machine and somewhere to put the output, choose the second.

The movement problem follows from the same thing. Getting cartons from a first-floor unit to a vehicle on the road is a trolley and a staircase, and the right trolley is the one that turns in your corridor rather than the one with the highest capacity. Measure the narrowest point of the route before you order anything, and send that measurement with the enquiry.
