How a handheld inkjet printer works
Inside is a thermal inkjet (TIJ) cartridge with a row of tiny nozzles. As you roll the printer across a carton or pouch, a wheel tracks the movement and the cartridge fires ink drops in step, so the code comes out the same size whatever your hand speed. You type the text on the screen once; the printer can add the date and a running batch number by itself.
Because there is no line or conveyor, one printer can code goods in a store room, on a dispatch table or on stacked cartons that cannot be moved.
Which print height do you need?
Print height is the tallest code the cartridge can make in one pass. 12.7 mm (half inch) covers 2 to 4 lines of batch, date and MRP and is the usual choice for pouches and small boxes. 25.4 mm (one inch) fits more lines or bigger text for shipper cartons. 50 mm printers make large text and logos on corrugated boxes and sacks.

Ink: solvent or water based
Solvent ink dries in seconds and holds on non-absorbent surfaces – laminated pouches, PET, glass, metal, foil and coated boxes. Water-based ink is cheaper but only holds on paper and plain corrugated board.
