Thermal Label Printer

A thermal label printer prints by heat on thermal paper, so it needs no ink, toner or ribbon. PackForge sells one: a pocket-size Bluetooth model for 58 mm rolls, supplied with ten rolls.

Quick answer: the PackForge thermal label printer (model PFA-MPR-H-K) pairs with a phone over Bluetooth 5.0, prints at 304 DPI on 58 mm thermal rolls and has a 750 mAh battery that you charge through a USB Type-C port. It costs ₹4,419 + ₹795 GST. It is not a 4x6 inch shipping-label printer: we do not sell one at present.

What a direct thermal label printer does

Inside the printer, a row of tiny heating dots presses against heat-sensitive paper. Where a dot warms, the paper turns black; where it stays cool, the paper stays white. Text, prices, barcodes and QR codes are built up line by line as the roll feeds through. Because the paper itself makes the image, there is no cartridge, toner or ribbon to buy. That is what “direct thermal” means, and it is the only kind of thermal printer PackForge sells.

The print head on our model has 304 dots per inch, fine enough for the bars of a barcode to scan cleanly. Prints are in one colour, black, on a white roll.

Thermal sticker printer, barcode printer or receipt printer?

Buyers search for the same machine under different names, depending on the job in front of them:

  • As a thermal sticker printer: price tags, product names, ingredient or “best before” stickers for a shop shelf or a home kitchen brand.
  • As a thermal barcode printer: stock labels for a small store room, where a phone app makes the code and the 304 DPI head prints it sharp enough to scan.
  • As a small receipt or memo printer: counter slips, lists and notes on the same 58 mm roll.
  • As a parcel label printer: short address or order labels for parcels, as long as the courier accepts a 58 mm wide label.

All four are the same direct thermal printer. What changes is the app on your phone and the length of label you print.

What it will not do

Being clear saves a return. The printer prints in black only and no wider than the 58 mm roll, so a full A6 or 4x6 inch courier label will not fit – PackForge does not sell a 4x6 shipping-label printer at present. It does not print on ordinary paper; only thermal rolls work. And it is not a coding machine: it makes stickers that you then apply, rather than printing directly onto a pouch, bottle or carton.

For printing a batch number or date straight onto film, foil, glass or a carton, packers use a handheld inkjet coder with a solvent ink cartridge. We sell the 2590 black solvent ink cartridge (W3T10B) for coders that take that cartridge, at ₹3,099 + ₹558 GST; the coder itself is not listed on our site.

Who buys a portable thermal label printer

Three kinds of owner come up most: online sellers working from home who print a few dozen shipping stickers daily, kirana and gift shops making price tags, and riders who label parcels on delivery. Students use it for notes and even small photos. Because paper is the only thing it uses up, short labels cost less than on an ink printer.

Being battery powered and about 12 × 12 × 8 cm, it works away from a socket: on a shop counter, beside the packing cartons or on the road.

Getting started in five steps

  1. Charge the battery through the Type-C port before first use.
  2. Load a 58 mm thermal roll – ten are in the box.
  3. Connect your phone by Bluetooth 5.0.
  4. Make the label in the app: text, price, barcode or QR code.
  5. Print and peel or tear, then check that a barcode scans before printing a full batch.

Label printer, coding cartridge or labelling machine?

Three different tools turn up when you search for “thermal printer” and “label printing”. They do three different jobs:

ToolWhat it doesOn PackForge
Thermal label printerPrints a sticker by heat; you peel and apply itBluetooth printer, ₹4,419 + ₹795 GST
Solvent ink cartridgeInks a code straight onto film, foil, glass or a carton, in a handheld or batch coder2590 cartridge, ₹3,099 + ₹558 GST
Labelling machineApplies ready-printed labels onto bottles or boxesRBL round bottle, FBL PN flat bottle, ALM online

A small seller usually starts with the thermal printer. A packer who must print a batch number on every pouch needs the coding route. A bottling line that already has printed labels looks at a labelling machine – all of them are listed under labelling machines.

Running cost: what you keep buying

With a direct thermal printer the only thing you buy again is paper. Ten 58 mm rolls come in the box, so the first order costs nothing extra to run. After that, buy thermal rolls of the same 58 mm width; plain paper will not print. There is no ink, toner or ribbon and nothing to refill. The battery charges over USB Type-C; keep a Type-C lead at the printing spot.

Thermal label printer price and buying

The PackForge Bluetooth thermal label printer is ₹4,419 + ₹795 GST, against an MRP of ₹5,139, and the price includes ten rolls. Delivery is free to any PIN code in India – about 3 days to metro cities and 5 to 6 days elsewhere – and every order carries a GST invoice raised against your GSTIN. The warranty is 2 years.
