A thermal inkjet (TIJ) cartridge is two parts in one: an ink reservoir and the printhead that sits directly under it. When you pass a handheld coder over a pouch, or a pack runs under an online coder, the printhead heats microscopic drops of ink and fires them in a pattern. Each character is a grid of dots, which is why the same cartridge can print text, a logo or a small QR code.
The 2590 uses a solvent-based black ink. Water-based inks soak into paper and corrugated board but sit wet on plastic film. A solvent ink evaporates within seconds, so it bonds to surfaces that do not absorb anything: laminated pouches, PET and glass bottles, aluminium foil and metal.
The tallest line the cartridge can print is 12.7 mm (half an inch). That is enough for a two- or three-line code of batch number, manufacturing date, expiry date and MRP, which is what most Indian packers need under the Legal Metrology rules for packaged goods.

Which printers take the W3T10B (2590) cartridge?
The cartridge fits by slot type, not by printer brand. Check these four things and you will order the right one the first time.
Look at the old cartridge. The label on the used cartridge, or the cartridge slot itself, says 2590 or W3T10B. If it does, this cartridge fits.
Handheld inkjet coders. Most 12.7 mm handheld TIJ coders sold in India take this cartridge, including the models on our handheld inkjet printer page.
Online and conveyor coders. Online TIJ printers and batch coding machines with a 12.7 mm, 2590-type head use the same cartridge.

Pouches and film
Laminated and metallised pouches for spices, snacks, namkeen, pickles and tea. The code dries before the next pouch drops on the stack.
PET and glass bottles
Oil, juice, sauce and pharma bottles. Code the shoulder or the cap area where the surface is clean and dry.
Foil and metal
Aluminium foil, cans and metal parts, where water-based ink would bead and wipe off.
Coated cartons and paper
Dispatch cartons, labels and coated mono cartons. It prints on plain corrugated board too.
It cannot give a clean code on wet, oily or dusty surfaces. For stick-on labels instead of direct coding, use a thermal label printer.
Fitting and storing the 2590 cartridge

Most coding problems start at the nozzle, not the ink. Solvent ink is made to dry fast, so a cartridge left uncapped while the line stops can dry at the nozzle plate. Put the cap back during breaks and at the end of each shift, and wipe the plate gently before restarting.
