Drive types explained

Side Belt Carton Sealer

How a carton is carried through the machine matters as much as how it is taped. This page explains side belt drive, compares it with top-bottom belt drive and names the PackForge models confirmed to use it.

Quick answer: A side belt carton sealer grips the carton with two belts on its side walls and pulls it straight past the top and bottom tape heads. It suits rigid, well-filled boxes. Top-bottom belt drive is gentler on light or tall cartons. The PackForge 102TU uses side drive belts and costs ₹1,07,520 + ₹19,354 GST.

What is a side belt carton sealer?

Every carton sealer needs something to move the box past its tape heads. In a side belt machine that job is done by two upright belts, one on each side guide. When the guides are closed to the carton width, the belts press lightly on the two side walls and pull the box forward at a steady speed. The top head rides on the upper flaps and the bottom head sits in the bed, so both seams are taped in the same pass.

Because the belts touch only the sides, the top and bottom faces stay free for the tape heads. That is why this layout, also called a side drive carton sealing machine, is the most common design for semi automatic sealers sold in India.

Side belt vs top-bottom belt: grip, carton size, belt wear

The other common layout drives the carton from above and below instead, with belts running on the top and bottom faces beside the tape heads. Here is how the two compare in general terms.

Which cartons run best on side belts?

Side belts like a box that holds its shape when squeezed gently from the sides. That covers most corrugated shippers used in Indian dispatch.

  • Regular slotted cartons filled to the brim, such as garment, FMCG and spare-part outers.
  • 3-ply and 5-ply boxes whose walls do not bow when pressed by hand.
  • Heavier cartons where a firm side grip keeps the box running straight under the head.
  • Runs of one or two sizes, where the guides are set once and left.

A quick test: squeeze a filled carton between your palms at the height of the belts. If the walls stay flat, a side belt case sealer will carry it well.

When does a top-bottom belt drive make more sense?

Some cartons dislike side pressure. A tall, narrow box can tip forward when gripped low on its sides. A lightly filled box with empty space at the top can bow inwards, and the tape then lands on a curved surface. Very light, soft board can crease where the belts touch.

For these boxes, a drive that holds the carton from above and below is gentler on the walls and keeps the flaps pressed shut. If your cartons fit this description, send a photo and the filled weight. We will tell you honestly whether a model in our range suits them, or whether better fill and stiffer board would solve the problem first.

Which PackForge models use side belt drive?

We list here only the models whose drive layout is stated on their own pages:

  • PackForge 102TU carton sealer: side drive belts keep the carton square; up to 20 cartons per minute; 50 or 76 mm tape; cartons from L150 x W170 x H110 mm to W500 x H500 mm. Rate ₹1,07,520 + ₹19,354 GST.
  • Automatic random sealer, auto size adjust: it measures each carton and moves its head and side belts to suit. Rate ₹3,19,270 + ₹57,469 GST.

For any other model, including the compact, SAC-01, 102TUS and 102TR, ask us and we will confirm the drive layout in writing with your quotation. The range page on semi automatic carton sealing machines shows the hand-set models side by side.

How firmly should side belts hold the carton?

Lightly. The belts should touch both walls with even pressure so the box cannot twist, but they should not dent the board. Signs of a wrong setting are easy to spot:

  • Too loose: the carton drifts, the tape lands off the centre seam, or the box slows at the head.
  • Too tight: corners crush, walls bow, or the motor strains and the carton stops.
  • Uneven: one side guide closer than the other, so the box runs at an angle.

Set the guides with a filled carton, not an empty one. A loaded box sits differently between the belts. The full set-up routine is in how to use a carton sealer, and persistent drift or jams are covered under carton sealer troubleshooting.

Questions buyers ask

What is a side belt carton sealer?

It is a carton sealer that moves the box with two belts pressing on its side walls. The top and bottom faces stay free, so both tape heads seal the seams in a single pass.

Side belt aur top-bottom belt mein kya farak hai?

Side belt carton ko dono side se pakadti hai, rigid aur bhare hue box ke liye theek hai. Top-bottom belt upar aur neeche se chalati hai, halke ya lambe box ke liye behtar hai.

Is a side drive carton sealing machine good for heavy cartons?

Yes, side belts grip a well-filled, rigid heavy carton firmly and keep it square under the tape head. The carton must still sit within the machine's size range and board strong enough for its load.

Why does my carton bend between the side belts?

Usually the guides are set too tight, or the box is under-filled so its walls give way. Set the guides with a filled carton and fill boxes to the brim.

Does the PackForge 102TU use side belts?

Yes. Its specification states side drive belts that keep the carton square. It seals up to 20 cartons per minute and costs ₹1,07,520 + ₹19,354 GST.

Can I convert a side belt sealer to top-bottom belt drive?

Do not plan on changing it later. Treat the drive layout as fixed when you buy, and choose it before ordering by sending us a photo and the filled weight of your carton.

How long do side belts last?

It depends on hours run, dust and how tightly they are set. Replace them when they look glazed, cracked or stop gripping after cleaning. Belts are wear parts held in stock.
