The roll: round, heavy, and it will not sit still

A fabric roll is a cylinder. It will not stack squarely, it rolls off a pallet if the pallet moves, and anything that presses into it leaves a mark that survives into the finished garment.

Wrap rather than strap. Film holds a roll stack together without a point load; a strap pulled across a roll marks it. A turntable stretch wrapper handles a palletised roll stack well once the film force is set low enough not to deform the outer rolls — and that setting is the entire job. Set at a default it will crush the outside of the stack.

For the individual roll, hand wrapping or a shrink pack is more common than any machine, and we would rather say so than sell you something that does not suit a cylinder.

Where rolls travel upright, they want a collar or a frame rather than more film. That is a fabrication job, and Surat has no shortage of people who can make one.

Cut pieces, dress material and the ordinary carton

Not everything leaves as a roll. Cut pieces, made-ups and packed dress material go out in cartons, and that is straightforward work: a semi automatic carton sealer where the size is steady, and a strapper for the load.

The one Surat-specific point is that these cartons are often light and are stacked high in a transport godown. That is a crush problem rather than a burst problem, and two straps hold a light carton's shape under a stack far better than tape alone.

Keep the strap tension moderate. On a light board a tight strap cuts the edge, and a cut edge is where the stack starts to fail.

Embroidery and value-added work

Embroidered and stone-work fabric is the case where the packing has to protect a surface rather than a shape.

Nothing may press on the worked face. That means interleaving between layers and a wrap that holds without compressing — the same low film force argument as the plain roll, applied harder.

It also means the machine should not be the last thing you fix. If worked fabric is arriving with flattened stone or pulled thread, look at the interleaving and the stacking first. A wrapper cannot undo a stack that is too tall.

Moving rolls without hurting anybody

A full fabric roll is an awkward two-person lift and it is lifted alone all day. The injuries are backs and fingers, and they happen at the point where the roll is being turned rather than carried.

A material handling trolley shaped for rolls costs very little and removes most of it. Where rolls sit on pallets, a hydraulic hand pallet truck does the rest, and the floor in a processing house is usually wet enough that wheel choice matters.

Tell us the floor condition with the enquiry. A wet or dyed floor is not a dry one, and a loaded truck that slides is steering the operator rather than the reverse.

Job work, and packing goods that are not yours

A large part of Pandesara and Sachin runs on job work. The fabric on your floor belongs to a trader, and it leaves your gate under his name. That changes the packing question from what protects it to what can be proved.

Two things follow. The pack has to carry the lot identity in a way that survives the journey - a label under the film rather than on top of it, because the top one comes off on the second handling. And the wrap has to look the same on every pallet that leaves, because an inconsistent pack is the first thing a trader points at when a claim is being argued.

This is an argument for a machine rather than hand wrapping, and it is the honest one. A turntable does not wrap better than a good hand wrapper on his best day. It wraps the same way on every pallet, all day, and consistency is what a job worker is actually selling.
