Carton Sealing Tape Guide

Carton sealing tape and packing tape are often the same roll sold under two names. The film, width and roll length behind those names still decide whether a box arrives shut, so this guide sorts them out for a sealer or a hand bench.

Quick answer: Carton sealing tape vs packing tape: in most Indian markets both mean pressure-sensitive tape, usually BOPP film. Carton sealing tape points to rolls made for closing corrugated boxes, often in machine lengths. Packing tape is the wider shop term and also covers hand rolls, printed and specialty tapes. For a sealer, match the head's width first.

Carton sealing tape vs packing tape: what is the real difference?

Ask ten suppliers and you will hear both names used for one product. The useful difference is not the name but what the roll is made for. A tape bought for a dispatch line has to suit corrugated board and, if a machine applies it, the tape head as well.

So if a quotation says packing tape, ask three things: film type, width and roll length. Those settle whether it will run on your machine.

Which tape types are used to close cartons?

Four families turn up on Indian packing floors. Their thickness is quoted differently, so compare like with like.

TypeWidths seenThicknessTypical use
BOPP (polypropylene)48, 60, 72 to 76 mmMicron printed on the roll; heavier grade for heavier boxesEveryday carton sealing by machine or hand
PVC48, 60, 76 mmGenerally a thicker film than BOPPCartons where a thicker, more flexible strip is wanted
Paper (kraft)VariesRated by paper weight more than micronBoxes where tape must take a pen mark or be pulped with the carton
Reinforced paper or filamentVariesThickest of the fourHeavy export cartons, usually with their own dispenser

On PackForge machines, BOPP is the common choice. PVC is listed for the 102TR, 5050Z and 5050J; paper and reinforced tapes are not listed for any of our heads, so ask before trying them.

What is carton sealing tape used for?

Its main job is to hold the top and bottom flaps of a corrugated box closed from packing to unpacking. Along the way it also does three smaller jobs.

  • Takes the weight on the bottom seam. The lower strip carries the contents every time the box is lifted, so it needs the stronger grade.
  • Shows tampering. A cut and re-taped seal is easy to spot, more so with printed tape.
  • Carries a brand. Printed tape puts your name on every side the strip reaches.

What it does not do is hold a weak or over-filled box together. Heavy loads may need a strap as well, and high-value export cartons are often given an H-seal, with tape on the centre seam and both end edges, as the 5050J edge sealer applies.

Is carton sealing tape clear better than brown, or should you print it?

  • Clear: lets carton print, product names and barcodes show through where the strip crosses them. The usual pick for printed outers and e-commerce boxes.
  • Brown (tan): blends with plain kraft board, so a slightly crooked seal is less obvious. Common on plain shippers and godown stock.
  • Printed: your logo or a warning line, made to order from your artwork. Useful for brand visibility and for spotting interference at the receiving dock.

Colour does not change strength. Grade, width and how well the strip is pressed down do. Whatever the colour, keep the strip flat where it crosses a shipping label so the scanner can read it.

48 mm or 72 mm: how do you choose the width?

Two things decide it: how wide the flap joint is, and how heavy the carton is. Light parcels close well with 48 mm (2 inch). Bigger or heavier boxes are better with 60 mm or 72 to 76 mm (3 inch), because the wider strip grips more board on each side of the joint.

On a machine, the head settles the question. Published widths for our models:

  • 102TUS for small cartons: 36 or 48 mm.
  • 102TU and 102PLS: 50 mm (2 inch) or 76 mm (3 inch).
  • 102TR and 5050Z: 48, 60 or 76 mm.
  • 5050J: 60 or 76 mm.
  • Compact, Semi Automatic and Automatic Random: not listed, so tell us the width you stock and we will confirm.

A roll a few millimetres away from the head's width runs crooked and wastes more than it saves.

Machine length carton sealing tape: why the roll matters

A hand roll is not a short machine roll. The core and the wind differ, and a hand roll fitted to a machine holder will not feed properly. Machine-length rolls are wound long, so the operator stops to change tape far less often; the limit is the diameter the holder on your model can take.

Most units that own a sealer keep both kinds: long rolls on the machine and hand rolls for odd sizes and rework. Some buyers call the sealer itself a carton packing strip machine; whatever the name, it needs the machine-wound roll. We stock both kinds, plus printed tape, under BOPP tape rolls. For threading a new roll, follow how to use a carton sealer.

How does tape choice affect seal strength?

  • Adhesive versus board: dusty, heavily recycled or cold board gives any adhesive less to hold. Wipe dust off and let cold-store cartons reach room temperature before sealing.
  • Width versus joint: the strip should overlap both flaps well; a narrow strip on a wide gap pulls open.
  • Leg length: clips that turn down each end by about 50 to 70 mm anchor the seal; stubs peel in transit.
  • Pressure: tape that is laid but not rolled down never reaches full grip. On a machine the rollers do this; by hand, rub it down.
  • Fill: a bulging top keeps pushing the joint open and the tape fails from the middle.

If a good tape still lifts, the cause is usually the machine settings or the board. The carton sealer troubleshooting page walks through those checks.

How does tape choice change cost per carton?

Tape is bought every month, so it is worth working out per box. Use your own roll length and price:

  1. Measure tape per carton: top strip plus bottom strip, each including both end clips.
  2. Divide the roll length by that figure to get cartons per roll.
  3. Divide the roll price by cartons per roll to get tape cost per carton.

For example, a 300 mm long carton with 60 mm clips at each end uses about 420 mm on top and the same below, roughly 840 mm per box. A wider tape costs more per metre but may let you drop a second strip on heavy boxes. A machine also lays the same length every time, while hand taping tends to vary. Read carton sealer vs tape dispenser for that comparison, or see the carton sealing machine price list for machine rates.

Buying tape for a PackForge sealer

Tell us the model and the width your head takes, the daily carton count and whether you want plain or printed tape. We will suggest a roll from our BOPP tape rolls that fits the holder. Rolls for every carton sealing machine we make are dispatched from our works in Faridabad with a GST invoice and free delivery, usually about 3 days to metro cities and 5 to 6 days elsewhere.

Questions buyers ask

Is packing tape the same as carton sealing tape?

Often yes, since both names are used for BOPP tape. Packing tape is the broader shop term, though, and can mean thin hand rolls or other films. Check film, width and roll length before buying it for a sealer.

Carton ke liye clear tape lein ya brown?

Clear tape keeps carton print and barcodes visible, so it suits printed and online-order boxes. Brown blends with plain kraft board. Strength depends on grade and width, not colour.

Can I use hand rolls on my carton sealer?

Not reliably. Hand rolls are shorter and wound on a different core, so they do not feed properly on a machine holder. Use machine-length rolls in the width your head is built for.

What width of tape does the PackForge 102TU take?

The 102TU takes 50 mm (2 inch) or 76 mm (3 inch) tape. Tell us the width you already stock, because a head set for one width and fed the other gives wandering seals.

Can PVC tape run on PackForge carton sealers?

PVC tape is listed for the 102TR, 5050Z and 5050J. For other models it is not listed, so send us the model and the tape you want to use and we will confirm before you buy.

Why does tape lift off cartons in winter?

Cold board and cold adhesive bond poorly, and cartons kept in cold rooms make it worse. Let cartons and rolls reach room temperature before sealing, and choose a grade suited to the conditions.

Do you supply printed carton sealing tape?

Yes, printed tape is made to order from your artwork. The workable run size depends on the print and quantity, so send the artwork and your yearly usage for a quote.
