Carton Sealer vs Strapping Machine
A carton sealer shuts the flaps with tape; a strapping machine ties a band round the whole box. They answer different problems, and plenty of dispatch bays need only one of them.
What does each machine actually do?
The two machines are often bought together, so people mix them up. They work on different parts of the box.
- A carton sealer closes the flaps. Side belts carry the filled box past a top and a bottom taping head. Each head lays a strip of BOPP tape along the seam, presses it down with rollers and cuts it, leaving a short leg on each end face. The box is shut against dust, rain and casual opening.
- A strapping machine binds the whole carton. A PP band is passed round the box, pulled to a set tension, heat-sealed to itself and cut. It does not close anything. It holds the shape of the box and gives the load a second path for its weight.
Put simply, tape decides whether the carton stays closed, and strap decides whether it stays in one piece when it is lifted, dropped or stacked. Our carton sealing machine page covers the taping side in full; the full PackForge strapping machine range is listed separately.

Which problem does tape fix, and which does strap fix?
Start from the damage you see at the receiving end, not from the machine. This table matches common complaints to the step that prevents them.
| What goes wrong | Tape (sealer) | Strap (strapper) |
|---|---|---|
| Flaps lift, dust or water gets in | Fixes it | Does not help; flaps stay open between straps |
| Carton looks opened on arrival | Fixes it; a cut seam is easy to see | Partly; a cut strap shows, but flaps can still be prised |
| Bottom gives way when a heavy box is lifted | Helps with wider tape and long end legs | Fixes it; the strap carries part of the weight |
| Lower cartons bulge in a high stack | Little effect | Fixes most of it |
| Two or three boxes must travel as one lot | Cannot do it | Fixes it |
| Courier or marketplace rejects the parcel | Needed; most want a fully closed carton | Optional |
If every complaint on your list sits in the tape column, a sealer alone will do. If the heavy-load rows matter, you need a strap as well.
Tape, strap or both: which one by carton weight?
Weight and journey decide most cases. Treat the bands below as a starting guide and test one packed carton of your own before you decide.
| Carton weight and journey | Tape | Strap | Usual choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light, roughly under 5 kg, courier or parcel network | Yes, 48 mm is usually enough | Not needed | Sealer only |
| Medium, roughly 5 to 15 kg, truck to a distributor | Yes | One strap if the cartons are stacked high | Sealer; strap only the stacked lots |
| Heavy, roughly 15 to 30 kg, or long road and export journeys | Yes, 3-inch tape, H-seal if specified | Two straps | Both, at two stations or on a combo |
| Above 30 kg, or wider or taller than 500 mm | By hand, if at all | Yes, often crossed | Strapping machine or hand tool |
Two published limits explain the last row. Most PackForge sealers take cartons up to 500 mm wide and 500 mm high, and the 5050J edge sealer is rated for packs of 2.5 to 30 kg. Beyond that, a strap does the real work.

Can a strap replace tape, or tape replace a strap?
Buyers on a tight budget often ask whether one machine can cover both jobs. In most cases it cannot.
- Strap without tape. Two straps hold the flaps down only where they cross. The rest of the seam stays open, so dust gets in and a hand can slip under a flap. Many courier partners will not book a carton closed this way.
- Tape without strap. Doubling the tape makes the seam look stronger, but the extra strip only adds adhesive area. It does not stop board from bulging under a stack, and it cannot tie two boxes into one lot.
- Cheaper first steps. Before buying a second machine, try 3-inch tape, better board and fuller filling. Many medium-weight cartons stop failing with those three changes alone.
For very heavy engineering boxes, our carton sealing machine for auto parts page explains why tape lets go and how to stop it.
Carton packing strapping machine: which type suits a carton line?
When cartons do need strap, the choice depends on daily count and carton weight. These are the PackForge models most carton packers look at:
- Low table top semi automatic, ₹34,150 + ₹6,147 GST. A compact table for small benches and modest counts.
- Arch type semi automatic strapping machine, ₹51,310 + ₹9,236 GST. The operator places the box and the arch feeds, tensions, seals and cuts; about 1,200 straps an hour on single phase power.
- 101HD heavy duty strapping table, ₹56,089 + ₹10,096 GST. Iron roller housing and a 2.5 mm table top for dense, sharp-cornered boxes; 6 to 15 mm strap at 450 Newton.
- Fully automatic, touch HMI, ₹2,43,350 + ₹43,803 GST. For lines where the person feeding a semi automatic machine has become the limit.
Run them on machine grade PP strap; hand-grade reels cause most feeding faults.
Two machines or one combo?
If most cartons need both tape and strap, there are two ways to set up the bay.
| Point | Sealer plus separate strapper | 102PLS combo |
|---|---|---|
| Example price before GST | Semi automatic sealer ₹69,730 plus arch strapper ₹51,310 = ₹1,21,040 + ₹21,787 GST | ₹4,04,992 + ₹72,899 GST |
| Handling per carton | Box is moved and squared again between stations | Box enters once and leaves taped and strapped |
| Floor plan | Two footprints (approx. 1,020 x 850 mm and 895 x 565 mm) plus a carrying path | One frame, 1,373 x 900 mm |
| Rated output | About 800 to 1,200 cartons an hour on the sealer | 20 cartons a minute on 500 mm long cartons |
| When one unit stops | The other keeps working | Both steps stop |
| Only some boxes need strap | Strap just those | Strapping arch stands idle |
The separate route costs less to buy and stays flexible. The 102PLS taping and strapping combo earns its price where nearly every box gets both, the boxes follow a straight path and floor space is tight. It takes cartons from L150 x W135 x H130 mm up to W500 x H500 mm, with 50 or 76 mm tape, and its table sets anywhere from 570 to 770 mm.

How should tape and strap sit on the same carton?
When a box gets both, the order and placement matter more than the machines.
- Tape first, strap second. A strap pulled over loose flaps bends them, and the tape then lands on a crooked seam.
- Cross the seam. Straps should run across the taped seam, not along it, so each band pins the flaps down at a second point.
- Keep straps in from the edges. A band too close to an end slides off when the box is tipped.
- Set tension for the board. A strap pulled hard on thin or damp board cuts into the top edge. Lower the tension and test before running a full shift.
- Protect printed corners. On printed or export cartons, cheap edge protectors stop the band from marking the board.
What does each machine cost to run?
Both machines run on single phase power, so the running cost is mostly what they consume and what wears.
- Sealer: machine-length tape rolls in the width the head takes, plus cutter blades, belts and rollers as they wear. Rolls are listed under BOPP tape rolls, and wear parts under carton sealer spares.
- Strapper: PP strap reels that suit the machine, plus the heater, gripper and cutter in the strapping head.
- Power: small. The semi automatic sealer draws about 0.24 kW and the arch strapper about 0.25 to 0.32 kW.
Keep a few wear parts on your own shelf for each machine. One worn blade or heater can stop a dispatch bay for a day.

Questions buyers ask
Carton sealer vs strapping machine: which should I buy first?
Buy the sealer first if cartons leave by courier or simply need closing. Buy the strapper first if boxes are already taped by hand but bulge in stacks or break when lifted.
Kya strapping machine se carton band ho jata hai?
Not fully. The strap holds the flaps only where it crosses them, so the seam stays open in between. Courier partners usually want the carton closed with tape as well.
How many straps does a heavy carton need?
Two parallel straps suit most heavy cartons. Two crossing straps help when a transporter restacks the load. Test one packed box, because board grade changes the answer.
Is the 102PLS worth it if only some cartons need strap?
Usually not. Its strapping arch stands idle on boxes that only need tape. A sealer plus a separate arch strapper costs less and lets you strap only the boxes that need it.
Can the same operator run both machines?
Yes, if the two stations stand next to each other and volumes are moderate. At higher counts the carrying and squaring between stations is where time goes, which is when a combo starts to make sense.
Does strapping damage printed cartons?
It can if tension is too high or the board is thin or damp. Lower the tension, keep straps away from the very edges and use edge protectors on printed or export cartons.
Tape aur strap dono machine Faridabad se kitne din mein aati hai?
Delivery is free across India. A metro address usually gets the machines in about 3 days and other towns in 5 to 6 days. On-site service is in Delhi NCR.
