A Complete Guide on How to Choose a Shrink Wrapping Machine and Care Tips

By PackForge Technical Team, Faridabad · 5 min read

A clear, tight film around a gift box, a bundle of water bottles held by its wrap, a printed sleeve on a juice bottle – all three are shrink packing, and each needs a different machine. Buyers often ask for “a shrink machine” and then discover they need two: one to close the film and one to shrink it. This guide explains how the parts fit together, which set-up suits which product and what to check before ordering.

What Is a Shrink Wrapping Machine?

Shrink wrapping happens in two steps. First a sealer closes film around the product: an L-sealer seals two sides of centre-fold film, a side sealer runs a continuous seal along the pack, and a web sealer wraps a curtain of film around a group. Then heat in a tunnel, a chamber or an oven makes the film draw tight. A “shrink wrapping machine” can mean either half or both together; the shrink packaging machines page lists all ten PackForge models.

Why Use Shrink Wrapping?

  • A retail finish: clear, close film on boxes, cosmetics, stationery and gift packs.
  • Bundles without cartons: film collations of bottles and cans.
  • Long items wrapped whole: boards, profiles and books on a side sealer.
  • Tamper evidence: neck bands and sleeves on bottles and jars.
  • Dust and moisture kept out between packing and sale.

  • S1538L hot air and S1838 steam tunnels for sleeves

Understanding Seal Size, Tunnel Size and Power

Seal size limits the pack on the sealer: 500 × 450 mm on the LS5045 and 600 mm film width on the 5545A. On the SL4518, width plus twice the height must stay within 450 mm and height within 150 mm. Tunnel size limits what passes through the heat: the 4520 tunnel of the 5545A is 200 mm high, the S1538L label tunnel takes containers up to 105 mm across and 350 mm tall. Conveyor loading ranges from 5 kg on the S260 to 30 kg on the larger S series tunnels and 40 kg on the WS6540 tunnel. Power is where most surprises come from: tunnels draw far more than sealers, up to 23 kW on the 6030X tunnel, and several need 380 V three phase.

Read these four numbers together: a pack that fits the sealer but not the tunnel opening, or a tunnel that needs three phase power you do not have, stops the whole line.

Shrink Machine Features to Look For

Adjustable belt speed and heat to suit the film.

Silicone-coated rollers in the tunnel, as on the 4520, so hot film is not marked.

A sealing frame bigger than your largest pack, not your average one.

Magnetic or pneumatic hold-down on the L-sealer, depending on whether you have air.

Warm-up and cool-down times you can plan a shift around.

Spares held locally for knives, tapes and heaters.

How to Choose the Right Shrink Wrapping Machine?

  1. Name the pack: boxed retail item, bundle, long item or bottle sleeve.
  2. Measure the largest one on all three sides and weigh it.
  3. Count packs per hour and how often the size changes.
  4. Check the power and air available at the spot.

For example, a gift box maker wrapping a few hundred mixed boxes a day would start with the LS5045 and the SC5540 chamber; a water bottler replacing cartons would look at the WS6540; a panel maker with boards longer than any frame would need the SL4518.

Shrink Machine Buying Checklist

  • Pack size: length, width and height of the largest pack, plus its weight for the tunnel conveyor.
  • Film: the type (POF, PVC, PE or LDPE) and the gauge your supplier sends.
  • Output: packs per hour at the busiest time, and how often the pack size changes in a shift.
  • Power: single phase 220 V only, or a 380 V three phase point as several tunnels need.
  • Air: the LS5045P, SL4518 (5 kg/cm2) and 6030X (6 kg/cm2) use compressed air; the magnetic LS5045S does not.
  • Floor: the 5545A and its tunnel weigh close to 480 kg together; the WS6540 pair about 600 kg.

Common Shrink Wrapping Problems

Film marked by the tunnel conveyor: the 4520 tunnel uses silicon-coated rotating rods so hot film does not stick or pick up marks.

Labels or mouldings distorting: some printed labels and thin plastic parts soften at shrinking heat; send the filled, labelled item for a test.

Packs queuing at a chamber: each pack in the SC5540 waits for its own cycle; when the queue grows in the busiest hour, a tunnel line is the next step.

Wide film on a narrow frame: keep the roll within the sealer’s film width – 600 mm on the 5545A.

How to Maintain a Shrink Wrapping Machine?

Every day: clear film scraps from the sealing knife and the tunnel belt, and let the tunnel cool before covering it.

Every week: check the seal for weak spots or burns – a change at the same settings points to the knife or its tape.

On pneumatic models: keep the air dry and at the rated pressure.

When the wrap changes: check film grade and belt speed before touching the heat.

Safety: switch off and let heaters cool before any cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shrink Wrapping Machines

Do I need a tunnel with an L-sealer?

Only if the film must shrink tight. A chamber such as the SC5540 does the same job in batches for lower volumes.

What film is used for shrink wrapping?

The product pages name POF for the 5545A, POF or PVC for the SL4518, PE or PVC for the 6030X and LDPE for the 4535 oven.

Which machine is best for bottle bundles?

A web sealer: the WS6540 semi automatic or the 6030X automatic, each with its own tunnel. Heavy LDPE bundles go through the 4535 oven.

Can shrink heat damage my product?

It can soften thin plastic mouldings or some printed labels. Test the actual filled, labelled item before ordering.

Is three phase power needed?

For several tunnels, yes: the 4520, 5540L and 4520L tunnels and the 4535 oven are listed for 380 V. The LS5045, SC5540 and S1538L run on 220 V, so a small unit can start without three phase.

How long does a tunnel take to heat up?

About 5 minutes on the S260 and around 10 minutes on the larger S series tunnels; allow 15 minutes to cool.
