A Complete Guide on How to Choose a Strapping Machine and Maintenance Tips
By PackForge Technical Team, Faridabad · 7 min read
Tape keeps a carton shut. A strap keeps it whole. When a heavy box is lifted by one corner, dropped off a tailboard or left at the bottom of a high stack, it is the band around it that carries part of the weight and stops the sides from bulging. That is why corrugation units, printing presses, godowns, spice and food packers and online sellers all end up buying some form of strapping equipment. This guide explains what each type does, which one suits which job, and how to keep it running without surprises.
What Is a Strapping Machine?
A strapping machine passes a plastic band around a carton or bundle, pulls it to a set tension, joins the two ends by heat and cuts it off the coil. The joint is made in the strap itself, so there is no clip to buy. The whole cycle takes a second or two on a bench machine.
It does not close the carton and it does not hold a pallet against sideways movement in a truck. Those are the jobs of a carton sealer and a stretch wrapper. Strapping holds the shape of the box and lets two or three boxes travel as one lot.
Why Should You Strap Your Cartons?
- Heavy boxes stay whole: the strap takes part of the load when a box is lifted, so the bottom does not give way.
- Stacks stay square: lower cartons in a high stack bulge less when they are strapped.
- Lots travel together: two or three cartons can be strapped into a single unit for the journey.
- A cut band is easy to spot: it shows at a glance on arrival, though only tape keeps the flaps fully shut.
- Every pack is the same: on a machine, tension is set once rather than judged by hand each time.
As a rough starting guide, a light parcel under about 5 kg on a courier network needs tape only. Cartons of roughly 15 to 30 kg, or anything on a long road or export journey, usually need two straps as well as tape. Try a real packed carton of yours on the route before you settle on it.
What Are the Major Types of Strapping Equipment?
Semi Automatic Bench Machines
The operator brings each carton to the table and the machine tensions, seals and cuts. Best for steady daily volumes.
- Standard and low table heights: 101H / 101L, 101HD, 740H, the arch type and the compact low table top
- Single phase supply
- From ₹34,150 + ₹6,147 GST
Automatic Arch Machines
The machine feeds the strap round the carton by itself. Offline models need someone to place the box; online models sit in the conveyor.
- Offline 101F, online 101FF and the touch HMI fully automatic
- Tension set on the machine
- Arch sized to your cartons
- From ₹2,29,376 + ₹41,288 GST
Taping and Strapping Combos
One machine that tapes the flaps and straps the carton in a single pass, for heavy cartons that need both.
- 20 cartons a minute rated output on the 102PLS
- 50 or 76 mm tape
- from ₹4,04,992 + ₹72,899 GST
Hand Strapping Tools
The tool goes to the load: pallets, coils, timber, pipe and crates strapped where they stand.
- Air (pneumatic tool), battery (101BPT) or manual (19SST)
- PP, PET or steel strap, depending on the tool
- From ₹20,500 + ₹3,690 GST
Understanding Strap Width, Tension and Cycle Time
Strap width is fixed by the machine head. In our range the 101H / 101L, 101HD and 740H tables handle 6 to 15 mm, the 101F and 101FF arches run 9 or 12 mm strap, and the 101BPT works 13 to 16 mm. Buy the machine for the strap your store already stocks; changing a machine is easier than changing your consumable.
Tension is how hard the strap is pulled before it is sealed. The 740H can be set anywhere from 15 to 45 kg, and the 101 series tables give a strap force of 450 newton. More tension is not always better: on a soft or bulging carton it crushes the top edge.
Cycle time is how long one strap takes once the carton is in place: about 1.5 seconds on a bench table and about 2 seconds on an automatic arch. On a bench machine, real output depends more on how quickly the operator gets each carton on and off than on the machine cycle.
Strapping Machine Features to Look For
Table height that suits the operator: standard height for heavier cartons, low table for small boxes handled all day.
A head built for your duty: machines that run in bursts and machines that run all shift differ in the sealing head and the drive.
An arch sized to your cartons: an arch much larger than your box wastes strap and time on every pass.
Infeed and outfeed heights: on a line machine, these must match your conveyor or you end up building transfer sections.
Written warranty: know what is covered. Ours is 12 months on manufacturing defects, wear parts excluded.
Spares you can actually get: heater blades, cutters, grippers, belts, rollers and electricals for the machine you buy.
How to Choose the Right Strapping Machine for Yourself?
Four answers narrow the whole range to one or two models:
- Carton or load size, including your smallest carton.
- How many an hour, or straps per day.
- Bench or in place: does the load come to a table, or is it strapped where it stands?
- The strap you buy today: material and width.
When cartons pile up because one person cannot keep lifting them into the arch, the fix is an automatic machine, not a faster bench. If they come a few dozen at a time between other jobs, a semi automatic costs a fraction as much and will not sit idle. If your existing machine works, say which one it is: matching its strap width and seal type saves changing your strap stock at the same time as the machine. Every model, with its rate, is listed on the strapping machines and tools page.
How to Maintain a Strapping Machine?
Most stoppages come from a short list of parts. Looking after them is mostly about knowing which ones they are:
Watch the head: heater blades, cutters and grippers do the sealing and cutting, and wear in normal use. Treat them as consumables.
Keep a spare head kit: a blade costs little; a line standing idle over a weekend waiting for one costs far more.
Check feed and tension parts when straps go loose: belts, rollers and the drive move the band through the arch and draw it tight. Loose straps or a band that does not come back properly usually point here rather than to the head.
Use the right strap grade: blades that burn out fast are often a sign of the wrong strap or too heavy a workload, so look at both first. Machines need machine-grade PP strap.
Keep the coil reachable: leave space beside the dispenser so loading a fresh coil stays quick.
Switch off before you open the head: isolate the supply and let the heater cool before touching blades or cutters.
Order parts the quick way: send the machine model and a clear photo of the part on WhatsApp; we confirm it in writing before dispatch.
Ask for an engineer when the fault is not obvious: replacing parts one at a time is slower and dearer than a proper look. For several machines, an AMC plan puts the scope in writing.
Spare parts for the machines in our range are listed on strapping machine spares, and the right strap for each model on PP strap rolls.
Frequently Asked Questions about Strapping Machines
Which strapping machine is best for a small packing unit?
For light cartons on a short bench, the compact low table top machine is the usual choice. For heavier cartons arriving at waist level, a standard height semi automatic is easier to load.
Can a strapping machine strap a pallet?
An arch machine only straps what fits through its arch. Pallets, coils and bundles that cannot travel to a machine are strapped in place with a hand tool.
Is a sealless joint strong enough for export loads?
For most pallet and bundle loads it holds well. Where an overseas buyer or shipping agent names a particular joint, use what they ask for.
Why does my strapping machine jam?
The most common cause is hand-grade strap loaded into a machine, or a strap that is slightly the wrong width. Check both before calling for service.
How often should heater blades be replaced?
There is no fixed interval; they wear with use. Keep one spare head kit, and if blades burn out quickly, check the strap grade and the duty.
Do you supply parts for machines bought elsewhere?
It depends on the make. WhatsApp us the rating plate and a picture of the part, and we will tell you clearly whether we can.
