What is a backpack brush cutter?

The 35.8 cc four-stroke engine gives about 1.0 kW, a little more than the side pack model. Power travels down a flexible shaft to the cutting head, so the engine's weight never hangs from the arms. With the metal blade fitted, the cut is about 255 mm wide; the nylon trimmer head widens it to about 430 mm. The 0.63 litre tank takes plain petrol, with engine oil kept separately.

It belongs on tea and coffee estates, terraced hill farms, canal embankments and orchard slopes, where a hip-slung machine drags a worker off balance. The 10 to 11 kg load sits on the back. On flat land with short jobs, the 31 CC side pack is lighter and simpler. Neither machine is meant for thick woody stems, which strain and can snap the shaft.
