What is an earth auger?

The 82 cc engine, fed from a 1.2 to 1.8 litre tank of petrol mixed with 2T oil, turns the spiral bit. As the flights rotate, they cut into the soil and lift loose earth up and out of the hole. Each bit reaches about 700 to 800 mm deep. Bits from 100 to 300 mm diameter are supplied as ordered, and the power head weighs 10 to 12 kg without one.

Use a narrow bit for fence posts and poles and a wider one for sapling pits or solar mounting footings. It works quickest in loose or worked soil; hard murrum and stony patches slow it sharply, and rock stops it. In hard ground, two operators should hold it, since the handles kick when the bit binds. To loosen a whole bed, use a power weeder instead.

Drilling a sapling pit with the auger – 4 steps

   Mark and check the sitePeg each hole position and make sure no buried cable or pipe runs underneath before you start drilling.

   Fit the right bitChoose the bit diameter for the job, from 100 to 300 mm, and lock it firmly onto the output shaft.

   Start and drillWith the engine running, lower the bit slowly into the soil. In hard ground, keep two operators on the handles.

   Clear and go deeperLift the bit now and then to throw out loose soil, stopping at the pit depth, within about 800 mm.
