Large, light, and easy to mark

A wardrobe panel weighs little and takes a great deal of space, and its surface is the product. Nothing that touches it may be abrasive, and nothing may press a hard point into it.

Film is good at this. It holds without a point load, it keeps dust off a polished surface, and it lets the handler see what he is carrying. What it does not do is protect a corner, and corners are where furniture is damaged.

Film plus corner protection is the pack. Board corners, foam profile or even folded scrap board under the film — any of them changes the outcome more than another two turns of film.

A box wrapping machine with top press suits flat-packed panels and cartons that must not bow, because the press holds the stack square while the film goes on.

Made-to-order, and no two loads the same

A workshop here may send a single dining table today and eight identical chairs tomorrow, and the packing has to cope with both.

That is an argument against automation and for a flexible setup: a wrapper the operator controls, a stock of protection material, and a person who knows what to protect. In this trade the operator's judgement is worth more than the machine's specification.

Where the same item does repeat — beds, chairs, standard cabinets — it is worth settling a standard pack for it and writing it down. A pack that changes with whoever is on duty produces claims that nobody can explain.

Photograph the agreed pack once and pin it up. It is the cheapest quality system a workshop can have.

Storage, dust and a market with no room

Stock stands here longer than anyone plans, and it stands in dust. Film keeps dust off a finished surface, which in this market is half the reason to wrap at all.

Wrap before storage, not before despatch. A piece wrapped when it is finished stays clean; a piece wrapped as the tempo arrives has already collected everything it was going to collect.

Where stock is stacked, put something between pieces. Film against film slides, and a stack that slides is a stack that falls over in a lane at eight in the morning.

Keep the film rolls themselves covered and off the floor. Dusty film does not cling to itself, and most wrapping complaints in a dusty trade start there.

Buying for a market unit

Space is the constraint here, not money. Tell us what floor you can spare and we will tell you honestly whether a machine fits it — a wrapper needs the operator to walk round the load.

Where there is no room at all, the answer is a good hand wrapper, decent film and a trained person, and we will say so rather than sell you a machine that has nowhere to stand.
