Many sizes, and the machine that suits them

A warehouse does not choose its cartons — the client's product does, and the mix changes as clients come and go.

That is the case where an automatic random carton sealer genuinely earns its cost, because it adjusts to each carton instead of being set for one. In a manufacturing unit with three sizes it would be an extravagance; here it is the correct machine.

Match it to the range you actually handle, and be honest about the extremes. A machine that covers ninety per cent of your boxes and leaves the rest to a bench is a sensible purchase; one bought to cover every edge case is not.

Ask what happens to the boxes outside the range before you buy, because that is where the labour goes.

Packing goods you do not own

Liability sits differently in this business. A damaged item is your problem even though you did not make it, choose its packaging or set its price.

The defence is a written pack standard per client, agreed before goods arrive. It should say the carton, the void fill, the closure and the label position, and it should be signed by somebody on their side.

Photograph a compliant pack for each client and keep it at the bench. When a claim comes, the argument is about whether the standard was followed, not about what the standard was.

Where a client's own packaging is inadequate, say so in writing at the start. A warehouse that quietly compensates for bad packaging owns the damage from then on.

Seasonal peaks, temporary staff and consistency

Volumes here move with the season and the staff move with the volume, which means the pack is being made by people who arrived last week.

Equipment that needs no judgement is worth more than equipment that is fast. A sealer that handles the carton correctly regardless of who feeds it removes the largest source of variation in a peak.

Put the pack standard on the wall as pictures, not text. It is read by people in a hurry, and pictures survive that.

Plan for the peak bench, not the normal one. Two simple stations usually beat one clever one when the floor doubles for two months.

Buying for a contract that may change

Warehouse contracts move, and equipment bought for one client can become idle when that client leaves.

Prefer machines that suit a range rather than a product, and prefer free-standing machines to anything built into a line. Resale and redeployment both matter more here than in a factory.

Ask about relocation before you buy — what has to be disconnected, and whether it can be moved to another bay by your own people.
