Handling equipment for Jhilmil Industrial Area

Jhilmil's lanes were laid out for a smaller lorry than the one that comes today. Most of what goes wrong here happens in the last thirty metres, between the truck and the shed door.

Jhilmil Industrial Area · Delhi, Delhi

Jhilmil Industrial Area in Shahdara holds engineering, plastics, chemicals, electricals and a good deal of job work, in sheds that are close together on lanes that fill up quickly.

PackForge Industries builds material handling equipment and strapping machines at Faridabad. This page is about moving goods in a place where a forklift is not an option.

No forklift, and no room for one

A forklift needs an aisle, a turning circle and somewhere to live. In most Jhilmil sheds it has none of the three, and the units that bought one often use it outside the gate only.

That leaves the hydraulic hand pallet truck as the workhorse, and it is a far better answer than it is given credit for. It moves a full pallet, it costs a fraction of a forklift, and it needs no operator training beyond ten minutes.

Its limits are real and worth knowing: it lifts to a few inches, not to a rack, and it needs a floor that is level enough and hard enough. It will not load a truck without a dock or a ramp.

Where loads are not palletised at all, a material handling trolley chosen for the shape of the goods does more per rupee than anything else we sell.

The gate, the ramp and the last thirty metres

Ask where the truck actually stands when it is loaded. In this estate the answer is often the lane, at a distance, with other traffic waiting.

That distance is the job. Goods are carried, not moved, and they are carried quickly because the lane is blocked. Damage and injuries both concentrate there.

The fix is rarely a bigger machine. It is staging the load so that everything is at the gate before the truck arrives, on a pallet or a trolley, ready to go in one movement rather than twenty.

A dock leveller or even a simple ramp changes the arithmetic where you own the loading point. Where you do not, staging is what you have, and it is free.

Drums, and the units that handle them badly

Chemical and coating units in this belt handle drums, and drums are the thing most often moved by rolling them on the rim.

It works until it does not. A rolled drum takes the corner of a lane at the wrong angle, and a two-hundred-litre drum on its side is not something two people can stop.

A drum carrier or lifter is inexpensive against a single incident, and it makes the job possible for one person instead of two. Where drums are decanted rather than shipped whole, a tilting cradle matters more than a lifter.

Tell us the drum type, whether it is steel or plastic, and whether the rim is a lip or a ring. The answer depends on it.

Floors that were laid a long time ago

The floors in this estate have been patched, cut for cables, and repaired around drains. That is the surface any wheel has to work on.

Wheel material decides everything on a floor like that. A hard wheel rolls easily on good concrete and hammers over broken sections; a softer wheel absorbs the surface and drags on a slope. Neither is right everywhere.

Send a photograph of the route with your enquiry rather than a description of it. It is the fastest way for us to tell you which wheel will actually work.

Where a floor is genuinely bad, repairing the run between store and gate is a better first purchase than any equipment, and we would rather say so.

Buying handling equipment sensibly

Handling equipment is bought once and used for years, and the parts that wear are wheels, seals and the pump. Ask about all three at the quotation stage.

A truck that has stood loaded for months develops a flat on the wheels and a seal that weeps. Both are cheap to replace and both are ignored until the truck is unusable.

Prices are ex works from Faridabad, GST and freight separate. Delivery into Shahdara is ordinary road freight, and we will tell you the despatch date on the day you ask.

Questions from buyers in Jhilmil Industrial Area

Can a hand pallet truck load a truck for us?

Not without a dock or a ramp. It lifts a few inches to move a pallet, and that is its job. Where you own the loading point, a ramp changes what is possible.

Our lane is blocked whenever a truck comes.

Stage the load at the gate before the truck arrives. Most damage and most injuries in this estate happen in the rush of carrying goods down a blocked lane.

We roll drums by hand. Is that a problem?

It works until a drum gets away on a slope, and then it is not a two-person problem. A drum carrier costs less than one incident.

Which wheels for a broken floor?

Send a photograph of the route. Hard wheels roll well and hammer over broken sections; softer wheels absorb the surface and drag on a slope.

Our pallet truck leaks and will not lift.

Usually a seal, and it is a cheap repair. Trucks left standing loaded for long periods are the ones that develop it.
