A converter or a formulation unit rarely runs one carton. Sizes change with the job, sometimes several times a day, and every change is a machine setting somebody has to make correctly.
That is the argument for an automatic random carton sealer, which adjusts to each carton as it arrives instead of being set for a size. It costs more than a fixed sealer and it is the right answer only where the sizes genuinely change; where they do not, it is money spent on flexibility you will never use.
Be honest with yourself about how many sizes actually run. Most units that describe themselves as having many sizes turn out to have three that matter and a long tail that could be handled by hand.
Where a fixed sealer suits, size changeover time is the number to ask about, not the top speed.
The carton is sealed, and from that moment its contents are taken on trust. Everything that identifies the batch has to be on or in the carton before that seal closes.
The failure is almost never the printing. It is a carton that was sealed while the label was still on the bench, or a batch changeover where three cartons of the previous batch were already on the conveyor.
A clear break at changeover is worth more than any equipment. Stop the line, clear the bench, account for what is on it, then start. It is the discipline that an audit looks for and the one that is quietly skipped when despatch is late.
Where a carton must be opened again for a check, plan how it is re-closed. A re-taped carton should be identifiable as re-taped, not disguised as untouched.

A strap applied after the seal is the part a receiving store looks at. Cut, it is obvious; intact, the carton has not been casually opened between your gate and theirs.
Keep one strap colour for one purpose if you use more than one. Where a customer or a regulator asks how you know a carton was not opened, a consistent strap is a simpler answer than a paragraph.
Tension moderately. On a printed shipper a tight strap marks the print, and a marked shipper looks like a damaged shipper to the person receiving it.
Where a machine sits in a line, its failure stops everything behind it, and that changes what is worth buying with it.
Ask for the wearing-parts list at the quotation stage and hold the two or three items that fail first. On a sealing head that is the blade and the tape-cutting assembly; on a strapping machine it is the head parts.
