A distributor packs differently from a manufacturer

A manufacturer packs one thing many times. A distributor packs many things once each, in whatever quantity the customer ordered this morning.

That single difference decides the equipment. Machines that pay for themselves through repetition do not pay here, and the money is better spent on a good bench, decent tape, a reliable dispenser and cartons in three sensible sizes.

Three carton sizes is the most useful thing on this page. A distributor with three sizes stacks predictably, quotes freight accurately and stops paying to ship air; one with fifteen sizes is running a stationery shop by accident.

Where one size does run steadily — a standard outer for a regular customer — a compact carton sealer earns its place at that end of the bench and nowhere else.

Breaking bulk, and the carton that was not made for it

Goods arrive here in a manufacturer's carton and leave in a smaller quantity, often in the same carton with less inside it.

A half-empty carton is weaker than a full one, not stronger. The contents were holding the walls apart, and without them the box collapses under the next one in the stack.

Fill the space or use a smaller box. Crumpled paper costs almost nothing and turns a half-empty carton back into a rigid one; the alternative is a claim you will pay for twice, once in goods and once in the customer's opinion.

Where you reship in the original carton, cover the original markings properly. A carton with two consignees' details on it goes to the wrong place eventually.

Seeing a machine work before you buy it

Because the works is in the same city, there is an option here that most buyers elsewhere do not have: bring the thing you actually pack and watch a machine do it.

It settles questions no specification can. Whether your carton sits square on the table, whether the strap marks your printed box, whether the operator can reach the controls without stretching — all of it is obvious in five minutes and arguable for weeks on paper.

Bring the heaviest version of what you pack, not the average one. Machines are chosen by the worst case, and the worst case is the load that reveals what a demonstration load hides.

Send the dimensions and weight first so the right machine is ready when you come.

Buying for an office or a small packing room

A packing bench in an office building is a different animal from one in a shed. There is a lift, a corridor, a landlord, and neighbours who will notice noise.

Say all of that at the enquiry. Machine weight and dimensions matter for the lift; a strapping machine's noise matters for the neighbours; and a heater's current draw matters where the whole floor shares one supply.

The equipment that suits this setting is small, quiet and needs no compressed air. Where compressed air is genuinely needed, the honest answer is usually that the work belongs in a shed rather than a floor of offices.

Storage is the other constraint. Cartons and film take space, and an office packing room usually runs out of it before it runs out of capacity.

Buying from a company in your own city

Being in the same city does not change our terms and we are not going to pretend it does. Prices are ex works, GST and freight are quoted separately, and the despatch date is given on the day you ask.

What it does change is how easy it is to sort a question out. A machine that can be brought back to the works if something is genuinely wrong with it is worth something, and it is the honest advantage of buying near home.
