Buy the step that is holding up despatch

The first machine should fix the step that makes people wait, and that step is identifiable by standing at the bench for twenty minutes at the end of a day.

If cartons are stacking up unsealed, the sealer is first. If sealed cartons are waiting to be strapped, the strapping machine is first. If pallets are being wrapped by a person walking backwards around them, the wrapper is first.

It is almost never the machine with the best specification. It is the machine that removes the queue, and the queue is visible to anyone willing to watch it.

Where nothing is queueing and despatch is still late, the problem is not equipment. It is staging or paperwork, and buying a machine will not touch it.

The arithmetic, done honestly

A machine pays back in three ways: labour that moves elsewhere, material that stops being wasted, and damage that stops being claimed. Most people count only the first.

Material is often the largest. A taping machine uses a measured length every time; a person uses whatever feels right, and the difference over a year is a real number you can measure this week by weighing your tape usage.

Damage is the hardest to count and the most valuable. Ask what you have credited to customers in a year for transit damage before deciding what you can afford.

Do not count labour you will not actually remove. If the same person stays at the bench doing something else, the saving is capacity, not cost, and it only becomes cost when you would otherwise have hired.

What to spend on before the machine

Three things usually return more than the first machine does, and all three cost less.

Better cartons, in fewer sizes. Better tape, of the right width for the board. And a bench at the right height with the materials within reach of the person using it.

We are aware how this reads coming from a machine manufacturer. It remains true, and a customer who fixes those three and then buys a machine gets far more from the machine than one who buys the machine first.

When you do buy, buy the consumable quality up at the same time. A good machine running poor tape produces poor seals faster than a person did.
