Where compressed air might be wanted — pneumatic tools, some sealers — run the line now even if nothing is connected to it. The pipe is cheap; cutting the floor is not.

Light the bench properly. Seal quality, label position and damage inspection all depend on somebody being able to see, and packing areas are routinely the worst-lit part of a new plant.

Very few new plants can justify a full line on day one, and they should not try. What they can do is buy in an order that does not close doors.

Start with the machines that suit any volume — a sealer and a strapping machine matched to your carton — and leave the floor arranged so a conveyor could join them later.

The decision that closes doors is layout, not equipment. A bench built into a corner cannot become a line; the same bench with a metre either side can.

Ask what the line looks like at three times your volume, then leave room for it and buy for today.

Ask for them to be held rather than delivered into a building site, or arrange dry, covered storage. A machine that spends a monsoon in a shell arrives with rust nobody budgeted for.

Commissioning should be planned for after the floor and the power are finished, not around them. It is a short job when the site is ready and a series of visits when it is not.
