On a strapping machine, the wear is in the head: the gripper, the cutter and the heating element that welds the strap. Almost every fault a user calls a machine failure is one of those three.
On a carton sealer, it is the blade and the tape-cutting assembly, and a blade is cheaper to change before it stops cutting than after — a worn blade drags the tape, which loads the mechanism that carries it.
On a pallet truck, it is wheels, the seal set and the pump. A truck that lowers itself overnight has a seal problem, not a scrap-value problem.
Knowing which three parts wear on your machine is most of maintenance. Hold them on a shelf and the machine stops being an emergency.
Plenty of equipment changes hands in this market, and some of it is a good buy. Some of it is somebody else's problem being passed on.
Run it before you pay. Watch it complete twenty cycles, not one — faults in these machines appear when something warms up, which is why a single demonstration cycle proves very little.
Ask what it is, exactly: make, model and year. A machine nobody can identify is a machine nobody can buy parts for, and the cost of a custom-made part is more than the saving on the purchase.
Look at the frame for weld repairs. A repaired frame usually means the machine was dropped or worked far beyond its rating, and everything inside it took the same treatment.
The honest answer is not always to replace, and we will say so even when it is our own machine on the floor.
Repair where the fault is in the wearing parts and the frame is straight. Rebuild where the head is worn but the machine suits the work. Replace where the machine never suited the work in the first place — which is the real reason behind a surprising number of chronic faults.
A machine that jams constantly is often a machine being asked to run a strap width or a carton size it was not chosen for. New equipment does not fix that; matching the machine to the job does.
Tell us what it is doing rather than what you think is wrong. The symptom leads to the part more reliably than the diagnosis does.
An annual maintenance contract is worth having where a stoppage costs you money and worth skipping where it costs you an afternoon.
For a shop or a small workshop with one bench machine, spares on the shelf and somebody who knows how to fit them beat a contract. For a unit whose despatch stops when the machine stops, the contract is the cheaper of the two.
Read what is covered. Labour, parts, visits and consumables are four separate things and a contract that covers one of them is not a contract that covers the machine.
