Light goods, and why the load is not the problem

Garments, plastic goods and light assemblies do not need strength from the strap. They need shape.

A bundle of poly-bagged garments will not burst; it will slump, and a slumped bundle takes twice the space in a truck and arrives creased. The strap here is holding a shape so that the stack behaves, not resisting a load.

That means low tension, and it means the tension being repeatable. Over-tensioning a light bundle is the commonest fault we see in this trade — it crushes the middle of the stack and marks whatever is on the outside.

A low table top strapping machine is built for exactly this: the table sits at bench height so a light bundle is slid on rather than lifted, and it is the machine most small units here should be looking at first.

Bench height, and the operator who stands all day

Machine height is treated as a detail and it is not. A packing operator makes the same movement several hundred times a day, and the height at which they make it decides whether they can still do it at five in the evening.

If the bundle has to be lifted to reach the strap slot, the machine is too tall for the work. If the operator stoops, it is too short. Both show up as slowness rather than as complaints.

Measure the bench you already pack on and tell us that height with the enquiry. It is more useful than the machine model you were considering.

Where the same bench also does sealing and labelling, plan the order of the steps before you place the machine. Walking round a machine two hundred times a day is a cost nobody records.

Power, and a machine that has to share a point

Small units here often run everything from a limited number of points, and the packing bench gets whatever is left.

A strapping machine's heater draws its current in short bursts. Sharing a point with a machine that starts under load gives you a weak weld at exactly the moment the other machine kicks in, and the joint fails later in the day, on the road.

Ask your electrician for a dedicated point at the bench. It is a small job when the shed is being organised and an awkward one once everything is running.

Buying for a two-person unit

In a unit where two people do everything, the machine that gets used is the one that needs no thought. Fewer settings, obvious loading of the strap coil, and a fault that an ordinary person can clear.

Ask what the operator is expected to do when the strap jams, and ask it before you buy. If the answer needs a technician, the machine will sit idle the first time it happens.
